Time off post MBA

I'll be heading to B-School this fall and was wondering if it is common to take time off after graduation / before FT positions start. Specifically targeting MBB or 2nd tier consulting firms. I need to find a little time to get married and stuff.

Thanks

Yes, I think it's pretty common. Not sure about MBB but I started with a BB after getting my MBA and didn't have to report for training until end of July/early August.

MBB also often has a January start date for MBA-level hires. So you can take half a year off if you need to.

Do they let you choose? 6 months funemployment after graduation sounds great, especially if you have a signing bonus to hold you over.

Sort of. For most firms/offices, you rank the different start dates in order of preference. Now if you have a major life event (like planning a wedding), you can mention it and they'll probably give you the time you need.

Also, I don't think you'll get your sign on bonus until closer to your start date. So, I'd find another stream of income for the 6 months.

Everyone (or almost everyone) takes big vacations before they start working FTso you'll have plenty of time to do whatever you want. MBB people at my school typically get to choose or rank between 3 start dates (I think they're September, October, or January). The problem with the January start date is that it puts you on a different promotional cycle than your colleagues that start in the fall. The obvious other issue is that you need to have the money to postpone working until January.
