Turning a Page on Covid

I am not a biotech guy, I have never invested nor have I ever looked at any company. This is to say that I am NOT trying to argue here that which vaccine is the BEST and why…I am sure given the large number of dumb asses on this forum, someone will try going down that route, in some parts of the world, for those of you, who haven’t left their home states yet, this is FYI: getting a US company manufactured vaccine is considered a status signaling effect..I am also not here to state that I am in favor of all the CREATIVE kind of restrictions that were put in place. Obviously this covid thing has had material impact on many folks’ health, livelihood, and mental situation, and I am certainly not trying to give the impression here that a death due to covid is less insignificant than a death from other more FATAL diseases (like cancer). But it does bother me so many important diseases like cancer are being ignored while something that is GENERALLY treatable is being put on the pedestal.

I am ALSO not against masks (everyone has the right to put whatever is socially-acceptable on their face, and if masks are OK, so should Muslim hijabs, Sikh turbans and Jewish yarmulke be), but it is a shame how this pandemic was handled and the impact that it has had on this world. Retailers, restaurants, gym operators have suffered too much financially at the gain of hospital or pharma operators. But that’s a separate topic. Calling this pandemic the Wuhan Flu was just plain wrong – dumb folks will latch onto this as they did on this forum a couple of years ago and as they did when the BLM movement broke out. I don’t know the US’ political history to have a debate on the BLM movement, and neither am I willing to do so, so please keep your views for your family.

I also have no idea where this covid / corona / alpha / beta / sigma / delta / phi betta kappa / omicron disease originated from, nor am I interested in doing any research on this (I ordered a book on this many weeks back, but decided to bin it without even opening it, because frankly, it is all speculation, our bodies are not live GPRS systems that this can be tracked as easily as claimed). The MORE IMPORTANT point though is that the average Joe cannot tell Asians apart (probably how they can’t either), but calling this the Chinese or the Wuhan flu has led to an increasing number of hate crimes, when your JOE is ignorant, uneducated, and culturally unexposed. Most Americans don’t know enough about their own country’s history, leave alone know anything meaningful about the rest of the world. I don’t know what they get taught in schools here, as I didn’t go to primary or secondary school there, but I did complete my undergrad and grad school in the US (and had a good time). I digressed there.

Just like Joe cannot differentiate between Asians, Joe also can’t tell South Asians from Arabs (I am a South Asian, and if I cannot tell South Asians / Arabs / Latin Americans apart unless I spend a few minutes talking to them, do you really think someone with no cultural exposure can?) This is important because globally there is some variant that has originated from a different geography (be it South Asia or Europe), but the number of hate crimes have gone up exponentially against those (South Asians, Asians etc.). Why? Because many hold preconceived biases and are usually on the lookout for an opportunity to attack. If you tell me to share some examples of hate crimes or statistics, I will politely tell you to fuck off, because I am not your Alexa or Siri (do your research on google yourself). But to make this lack of cultural education painfully obvious, during my time on the Street, I have met seemingly educated folks and / or financiers, who are insensitive to these things or haven’t taken the time to educate themselves on cultural subtleties, which is a travesty in itself.

Anyways, so who takes the blame here? Well Joe the plumber is going to come back home, pop a beer, and go onto TV or social media, so if one was to point a finger at some entity, I’d say it’d be the media. Can’t comment on the algorithms really, as I haven’t spend time on the backend, but at least there I can control who I follow. I don’t like consuming content on TV (unless it is business / economics / markets related), as the media loves playing things up for ratings / eyeballs. Obviously, it makes economic sense from their perspective, the health of their business model depends upon finding eye-catching news (regardless of whether they are true or not or inflated to the 100th degree), and then pushing them out nonstop until they can find something else to terrify folks with. Not saying that all media outlets are the same, but I have always been very skeptical of their integrity. This issue can only be resolved if there are strict financial consequences for pushing mis or disinformation. For these people, who run media outlets, I am willing to wager that a disease or a war type situation is ideal for short term profits. Maybe one day they realize that if the entire world vanishes due to the shit they keep on spewing, there will be no eyeballs left to consume their content altogether. Until then, those of you, who watch TV media, are their slaves.
