2nd Year Associate looking to lateral into IB
Currently a 2nd year associate in NY in S&T and looking into lateral into IB as an an1, have realized that S&T is not for me long term. 25 y/o and want to avoid going to business school to get into IB if possible. Realize its tough in the current market, is it possible for me to make the move with enough networking or is B school my only hope?
Bump
Idt you need to go to business school, should be doable if you’re okay starting as an analyst
Not really the same but one guy from my group used to work in equity capital markets as an aso2 or 3 and lateraled to here as an aso2, but would imagine the skillset could be quite different coming from S&T
do you think it would be possible to lateral given the current market?
can u lateral within your bank? seems like the easiest route
Unfortunately have tried internally without success
Move into a capital markets group, either internally or at another firm. Work is easier and more repetitive
Would ideally like to avoid an ECM/DCM type role , don't feel that's really what I'm looking for
These are quite different functions and you’re probably not going to be happy regressing to an analyst 1 level after being an associate in s&t. You’re going to make probably 150k-200k tops as an analyst 1, versus likely much more in s&t
What product do you cover in S&T? Would think certain FIs could go to DCM, equities ECM, structured to SP desks. I think more traditional M&A though might be tougher though plus you’re probably taking a big pay cut to An1
I’m in FICC. I think I would be happy with any coverage group really. I would ideally want to avoid ECM or DCM.
