Extreme Cold Feet for IB Summer Analyst

Obviously am grateful for my position and success given that it is such a difficult hiring market, however I realized I regret signing my IB summer internship. I am realizing that my skillset may be more suited to equity sales/ FX sales/ Investor Relations. I would also be open to commodities sales.

Does anyone have an experience pivoting from IB to sales and advice? I would like to specifically know if anyone has any experience in internal mobility- I realize this is not a common move. I am also concerned because I know that sales tends to have fewer positions than IB

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pivoting from IB to sales roles like equity sales, FX sales, or investor relations is not unheard of, but it does require a strategic approach. Here’s some advice:

  1. Leverage Internal Mobility Programs: If you're at a firm like JP Morgan, internal mobility is possible, as highlighted in WSO threads. Network discreetly with people in the sales divisions you're interested in (VPs, associates, etc.) and express your interest in learning more about their roles. Avoid broadcasting your intentions to your current team or other interns, as this could backfire.

  2. Timing is Key: Ideally, wait until performance reviews are submitted before making any moves. This ensures your current team doesn’t sabotage your feedback. After reviews, approach HR or your sponsor to discuss opportunities in sales.

  3. Build Relationships: Start networking with individuals in the sales divisions you’re targeting. Ask for informational interviews or casual coffee chats to understand their work and express your interest. This can help you build allies who might advocate for you when positions open up.

  4. Highlight Transferable Skills: Emphasize skills from your IB experience that align with sales roles, such as client interaction, understanding of financial products, and analytical abilities. Tailor your pitch to show how your background can add value to the sales team.

  5. Be Prepared for Fewer Openings: As you mentioned, sales roles often have fewer positions than IB. This means you’ll need to be persistent and patient. Keep networking and stay on top of internal job postings.

  6. Consider External Opportunities: If internal mobility doesn’t work out, you can explore external roles in sales or investor relations. Your IB experience will still be valuable, especially if you can demonstrate a strong understanding of client needs and market dynamics.

Remember, discretion and timing are crucial when navigating internal mobility. Good luck!
