Fastest progression in S&T
In IBD the progression is pretty standard - every 3 years you're promoted. In S&T there are some special cases of very fast promotions, such as Kunal Shah of GS making MD in 6 years (albeit back when prop trading was at its height). What are some of the fast track promotions you've heard of? Are they still a thing in today's S&T divisions?
In theory, you could go
Analyst 2 years
Associate/AVP 2.5 years
VP 2 years
Director 2 years (?)
---
8.5 years analyst => MD
I don't think it's really possible to do any better than this outside of something really nonstandard happening like managing to jump laterally to a higher level position or something.
Couple of years ago newly promoted GS partner made it in 8yrs
In trading? Do we have a division/name or is it only internal knowledge
What product was this?
I knew a guy who started Mar 2015 that became Director Dec 2020... pretty much as fast as you can get these days. You need to be both good and there needs to. Be openings on the desk. He did it all in one bank but I know another guy that also got to director pretty fast (similar time scale) by lateraling.
Keep in mind you can start getting 7 figures by VP if you're good and in a good seat, so title isn't really imperative.
What are good seats would u say?
1M as a VP? Surely only doable in an exceptional year
You can hit that number as an associate in trading but you need your own book, be in the 99th percentile in terms of performance (>20mio PNL), and be at the right bank (i.e. one with a culture that rewards that sort of performance). I personally know 2-3 individuals that fall in this category.
I know someone that did 1 year S&T, then lateraled to VP at an AM. Pretty impressive to be VP at 23 yrs old.
Then lateraled to top hedge fund.
