Getting fed to the wolves
I am 2 years into a stint as a physical trader and I have a feeling that I am going to be let go soon as I was unable to "build a book" as successfully as some of my peers (yes i had to cold call get over it). Generally, you have 2 years to make it as a trader and if not you are fed to the wolves. What is my exit strategy here? I trade something so niche that I cannot lateral to another shop and moving into industry would be far from lucrative. Can my skills be applied to an equities role? Perhaps the middle office at a bank? Maybe wealth management? I had a few offers in the middle office coming out of school and I was thinking about reaching out to the hiring managers to see if I could drum something up there. Any advice?
yes at most places you are given anywhere from 9 months to 2 years to show your potential as a trader.
You can try requesting a transfer into a risk/trading support group inside your firm or switch to market analysis as an analyst. Try to leverage your physical experience is some capacity. (even as a consultant)
You're still young and can transfer industries, just more hoops to just through and much more painful
This might be hard to believe but the firm I work for does not have positions in analysis. Do you think it would be feasible to switch to analysis at a different company trading a different product?
You in lumber?
I think this depends on what exactly your background is. By 2 years do you mean you're 2 years out of undergrad and only 24? Or was this a proper junior trader role after X years doing execution work?
Is it so niche that there are no other shops in your region?
If you have logistics experience and you're relatively young, and still confident that you have potential to trade, what about moving into a larger shop with a more structured environment and giving it another go? I'm assuming this is ags.
If you have 5-6 years experience, MBA? Depending on the breadth of your experience, could be an interesting candidate. Niche is good. And international experience would be good too.
I don't see a route to equities and don't see why someone who wanted to trade commodities would want to do wealth mgt or mid office at a bb... those options just don't seem to fit / won't be great routes "out" of your predicament, unless you have a genuine interest.
