How to exit WM for S&T?

Hi all,

I am currently an undergraduate studying business management at a UK semi-target (bath, bristol, durham), and I am graduating in July. I sent out 50+ applications for grad schemes and the only offer I was able to pull in the end was a wealth management programme in London at a strong BB (think Goldman, MS, etc.). Though I am happy to have landed a role in such a competitive job market, this is not where my true dream lies. I am deeply fascinated by markets, and hence want to end up in S&T if possible. How likely would such a move be? I understand it would probably be quite difficult as my course is not super technical and neither is wealth management. My current plan is to do the WM role for a few months and then apply to other firms for S&T or try to transfer internally. I would also be open to considering a masters if that would help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Breaking into S&T from Wealth Management (WM) is challenging but not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to maximize your chances:

  1. Leverage Internal Transfers: Since you’re at a strong BB, internal mobility is your best bet. Build relationships with people in the S&T division, attend internal networking events, and express your interest in transitioning. Highlight your passion for markets and any relevant skills you’ve developed in WM.

  2. Develop Technical Skills: S&T roles often require strong technical and market knowledge. Start learning programming languages like Python or VBA, and get comfortable with Excel modeling. Additionally, read books like Market Wizards and Trading in the Zone to deepen your understanding of trading strategies.

  3. Gain Market Knowledge: Stay updated on market trends by reading resources like WSJ, FT, Bloomberg, and Reuters. This will help you speak confidently about markets during networking or interviews.

  4. Consider a Master’s Degree: A Master’s in Financial Engineering, Finance, or a related field from a top school (e.g., LSE, Imperial, or Oxbridge) can significantly boost your chances. Programs like Columbia’s MFE are particularly well-regarded for S&T.

  5. Network Aggressively: Networking is critical. Reach out to alumni from your university who are in S&T roles, attend industry events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Informational interviews can provide insights and open doors.

  6. Apply Externally: While internal transfers are ideal, don’t hesitate to apply to S&T roles at other firms. Tailor your applications to highlight transferable skills from WM, such as client management, understanding of financial products, and relationship-building.

  7. Prepare for Interviews: S&T interviews often test your market knowledge, mental math, and ability to think on your feet. Practice brainteasers, market pitch presentations, and technical questions.

  8. Be Persistent: The transition may take time, but persistence is key. If you don’t succeed immediately, consider roles in related fields like research or asset management, which can serve as stepping stones.

Remember, networking and demonstrating a genuine passion for markets will be your strongest assets. Good luck!
