Institutional Sales Pay Structures

Fellas and few ladies,

Wanted to drop a line and ask a question regarding Institutional Sales payment structures. I recently went on an interview at a boutique research firm that is building out a sell-side desk. Although they primarily generate revenue through comission sharing agreements, they do have a handful of sales-traders that will provide execution and split comissions with research/sales.

With that as a primer, my question is really focused on entry level and more senior salesperson institutional sales salary packages. First, this firm works off of a very low base and offers comissions in conjuction with that base until you reach the 100K mark. At that point, you continue to collect the low base however when you receive quarterly commisssion that base is "drawn" against your comissions. In other words, if you received 10k in base over the quarter and earned 50K in commissions then your take away would be 40K. I'm wondering if this "draw" against comissions is common in the instituional sales world. Any insight would be appreciated.

Obviously if you are making over 200K the draw is not much of a concern, but would like to know if at the BB or smaller mid-market banks with sales teams the sr. salespeople receive Base+commission or if they go commission only at some point.

Please share your insights,

StillStanding

They receive sales credits, you should go to the trading forum they should be more informed on draws and its structuring. At BB youll always receive a base, thought at the upper levels its not much of your all in (thats the benefit of BBs over "most" other shops concerning trading/sales in that youll receive a base).
