Is it worth to work at Trafigura in 2023?

Everyone I’ve spoken to has made it seem like it’s one of the worst places for junior employees looking to learn about the physical commodity trading business, especially for someone doing a career transition. No mentorship, asshole seniors, etc.

does anyone have anything GOOD to say about them besides their compensation scheme (which is dodgy in and of itself)

The best places for a junior in the biz are the majors for mentorship and learning opportunity.

IMO Trafi resembles more of a pod shop type culture than anything.  When they say they want entrepreneurial spirit, no kidding, that's why some people are attracted to working there (not just the $$$).

Someone who's worked there extensively can comment further.

If you are independent and a quick learner then yes it could be good as a junior. I know of 3 individuals who have risen through the senior ranks. Although they could be an outlier.

As others have said in previous posts, it would be more of a natural transition once you get experience elsewhere before you land at a place like Traf. There is a limited capacity to make mistakes so you’d need to make sure you know what you’re doing.

Regardless at a place like Traf or not, it is difficult to navigate the industry. You need a good boss or mentor that will show you the ropes. This may be difficult to find at a place like Traf.

It just seems so counterintuitive because I'd imagine people in their early/mid 30s doing career transitions have young kids at home.  Trafigura seems like the last place for someone like that with how intense they are.  I always assumed Trafi was where young guys go, put in their time in ops/finance/risk,  and join one of the majors or chiller shops as a trader.

It all depends they literally explain in the interview you will have little flexible with where you get placed, but we assured it will have upside. Know someone who lived in Geneva with a young family for a while had no fun, know someone who moved their young family to Asia no fun. But that is the nature of the business you choosing.
