Middle office to Front office in energy trading (IB, utilities...)
Hi everybody,
I'm currently working in a small oil trading desk of a gas company where we only do derivatives (not physical).
I'm here since mid of last year and it's my first job but I would like to consider new opportunities (I hope to find something new before the end of the year) in IB, utilities or trading companies (Vitol, Glencore...) in UK, Switzerland or Netherlands.
I'm based in Europe, and because it's getting difficult to get a front office job in a derivatives energy trading when banks are closing their desk and job offers from utilities are quiet rare (however I only started my research this month and we are not entering in the best season for job research). I hope things will be better in September.
I already did few internship (6 months) experiences, in risk (cross assets) and in research (commodities) all for end of first tier banks.
I know the best way to get into physical trading is to pass through operation jobs. However as my background is really focus on financial markets (derivatives pricing, option theory...). I would prefer to first focus my research on derivatives trading.
I'm also open to other front office job like structurer, market analyst...
I have seen in this forum trader assistant for trading companies (like Vitol) rarely become trader after. I would know more about other possibilities (Middle Office to Front Office in IB or even utilities, Risk to Front Office....).
Any helpful comments would be welcome,
Thank you very much!
Regards,
Trafigura has a graduate program: http://futuretalent.trafigura.com/en/sectors/oil-and-its-derivatives/#G…
Thank you all for your responses.
Trafigura has a graduate program but I graduated already 2 years ago. They also have a kind of program for 2-5 years xp traders and I will see that. I didn't check yet the details but I hope it's not for physical trading.
I have also one more question what about doing Front office -> "Middle in a more prestigious firm" -> and coming back to the front
If the UK is your first choice I would focus on the supermajors, the banks, Centrica...
Majors and most trading houses have Junior Trader programs aimed at people with some experience. See the Trafigura link above.
If you really want to focus on derivatives, do your homework and ask yourself whether those fit your goals.
None of them will guarantee you a seat on a trading desk.
For what it's worth, you've been in your current role less than a year. Do you think you've learned everything there is to learn there?
Hi Chewie,
Thank you for your comment.
Except Trafigura, I have never heard about these programs. Only heard about graduate programs but I'm not sure at all I'm still eligible. However I have seen in the past ENI offering junior position on the trading desk but not program.
As for what I can learn, yes I still have things to learn (not so much however). But the problem comes more from the team where I'm working. I am very pessimistic about the near future (6 months - 1year) because of a lot of things I don't want/need to disclose :).
Thank you
Fair enough ;-)
Try to keep in mind that you currently have a job in which you are still learning, so you are in no rush. You mentioned you've only been looking for a month. Don't jump on the first thing that comes along.
All the best.
Thanks a lot GoodBread and Chewie for your responses!
I agree with you I'm not in rush so I'll be careful for my next opportunity and don't take the first one coming. Maybe September would be a better period to see how looks the job market.
Next time I have the opportunity to talk with a HH I'll ask!
I'll try to come back there once my situation move forward to keep you updated.
All the best for you
