Mortgaged Backed Securities vs Commodities/Energy
- what is the best way to transition from a career in trading mortgaged backed secutiries to a career in commodities/energy trading? What should my expectations be as far as title at point of entry?

My experience in MBS showed me that it is really a unique kind of trading... very unique otc products (phone-based trading) versus something that is traded electronically or in a pit... I would imagine that because of this it would make it more difficult to move into commodities/energy from mbs than it would be from trading some other instrument electronically. However, I am not an expert and don't know about people moving to different products. I would have to imagine that your best bet is to stay in your firm and move to a different desk (assuming your firm trades many products). I'm interested as to what people say on this thread.

start applying to entry level jobs.. nothing from your current job is going to help with energy..
Agreed. You will need to take a paycut and step back. But the good news is once you make back to the trader level you may move up the ranks faster since you have real experience trading. But no one is going to bring you to trade right away.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I figured that it would require taking a step back, but was trying to capitalize on any possible connections between the two I could. So on that note, anyone have any inside to any entry level commodities/energy trading opportunities in the Houston market? Or suggestions?
there are none unless your a new college grad or mba at a target...
monty09, really? Then how would you suggest? Scheduling? I monitor the postings daily and have seen one in particular for entry level trading, but required Spanish bi-lingual.
