Mortgaged Backed Securities vs Commodities/Energy

  • what is the best way to transition from a career in trading mortgaged backed secutiries to a career in commodities/energy trading? What should my expectations be as far as title at point of entry?

My experience in MBS showed me that it is really a unique kind of trading... very unique otc products (phone-based trading) versus something that is traded electronically or in a pit... I would imagine that because of this it would make it more difficult to move into commodities/energy from mbs than it would be from trading some other instrument electronically. However, I am not an expert and don't know about people moving to different products. I would have to imagine that your best bet is to stay in your firm and move to a different desk (assuming your firm trades many products). I'm interested as to what people say on this thread.

bayredThanks! I appreciate the feedback. I figured that it would require taking a step back, but was trying to capitalize on any possible connections between the two I could. So on that note, anyone have any inside to any entry level commodities/energy trading opportunities in the Houston market? Or suggestions?

there are none unless your a new college grad or mba at a target...
