Is the trading floor dead? Everyday I see all the fuss about IB/PE. From anecdotal evidence I haven’t come across any students aspiring for a role in trading which was once a coveted role in finance? Is this the general feeling across the board or am I in an echo chamber?
There are far fewer seats than there were before and it is a much different skill set today than IB is.
Would you recommend IBD more than trading floor at banks?
It really depends on the person - IB is a better fit for some, S&T is a better fit for others. It's a very individualistic thing imo.
Stupid comparison/question to ask imo - like what has been said, vastly two different skill sets needed and that will be continually growing apart. In the past, some have thought SnT as the “back-up” if they couldn’t get an IB seat - I don’t think the rates vol desk wants a excel monkey anymore but a code monkey who can use excel. More engineering/cs/math majors now in trading seats. Maybe it’s because I was at a French bank but most of the interns were some type of engineering/math
