S&T Networking Semi/Non Target

I go to a solid semi target for investment banking, but there are not many alums in S&T and there are multiple places that I want to apply that just simply do not have any alums in S&T. How should I approach networking? I feel like randoms wouldn't be as willing to help and not sure if it's in my best interest.

S&T is a pretty small industry compared to IB, networking is a lot easier but also a lot easier to mess up. Start networking with people at smaller shops that do S&T and then move your way up to larger banks.

Wouldn’t hurt to read the WSJ everyday, listen to podcasts and get a gist of the markets.

What I’ve noticed is that it’s very difficult to get S&T people off the desk for a chat when they’re working vs IB people, so be ready to be flexible, taking calls past 6pm most cases.

Just approach it as people normally do. I come from a non-target with 0 S&T alum.

Just because somebody didn’t go to your school it doesn’t mean they won’t help you. Yes, perhaps they are less inclined to do so, but just reach out anyway. The worst thing that can happen is they ignore you. Making a lot of shots is often accompanied with many misses.

I come from a very non target. I have no alumni at any finance firms.

I was able to land a sophomore trading internship at a hedge fund, s&t at a BB my junior summer, and FT offer s&t at a different firm than my junior summer internship.

Here’s what I did:
1) I first reached out to analyst at these firms via linkedin for 15-20 minute coffee chats
2) After the coffee chats I would ask them if they could connect me with an associate or anyone the think will be valuable
3) if you’re in clubs like FMA or national org or frat filter with people who were in that org and send in the subject of the linkedin request “Student in (insert the common org) interested in (insert position) at (insert firm)”
4) ask your peers to make introductions
5) Go on the company websites and see their early careers section for when they are having insight calls - most take attendance!
6) go to other schools career fairs if they are close
7) STOP THINKING BECAUSE YOU GO TO A NONTARGET ITS NOT ATTAINABLE
