S&T technicals for interviews at an Investment Bank?

What would you guys say are the most important things to prep for going into a interview for a S&T role for a summer analyst position? What type of things should I prepare for apart from having a general market understanding of what is going on at a macro level.

For a Sales & Trading (S&T) interview, there are a few key areas you should focus on:

  1. Product Knowledge: Understand the basics of the product you're interviewing for. Know what factors affect the price of the product, risk factors the product faces and how to hedge them, why someone would want to invest in a particular product, and what customers the product attracts.

  2. Technical Skills: Depending on the desk you're aiming for, certain technical skills might be beneficial. For example, knowledge of Bloomberg in Excel can be useful, and if you're aiming for an equities desk, proficiency in Python could be advantageous.

  3. Networking: S&T is a networking game. Spend adequate time with everyone on your desk or related desks by shadowing and getting coffee. Don't be afraid to engage with senior members of the team, as this can be a great way to get to know them outside of the work context.

  4. Market Understanding: Keep up to date with the markets. This is crucial for any S&T role. You should be able to discuss current market trends and news, and how they might impact the product or area you're interviewing for.

  5. Reading: There are many technical books that provide a deeper understanding of a particular product. If you have time, read one or two that interest you to really impress the interviewer.

Remember, you're not expected to know everything about the product, but having a solid understanding of the basics and showing a genuine interest in the area will go a long way. Good luck!

Most important I’ll probably say just to be a chill and personable dude. Desk fit has always been more important in market roles than others, and now that each desk hires 0-1 person a year it’s even more important whether the ppl want to work with u.

Obviously prepare a stock pitch, know your fix income, yield curve, what happen when interest rate go up.
