Thoughts on a FX and IR Trading Internship at LVMH (Paris)?
Hi everyone,
I’m a French student currently preparing my gap year (année de césure), during which I plan to do two 6-month internships. I might have the opportunity to do my first internship at LVMH, in their corporate treasury team in Paris, focused on FX and interest rate trading/hedging. I should get the final answer on Monday.
I’d love to get your thoughts on a few points: 1. Is this considered a solid experience in the eyes of top investment banks (especially US ones like Goldman, JPM, Morgan Stanley)? 2. Would it help me break into S&T or structuring in a tier 1 bank afterward, for the second internship or post-graduation? 3. Or is it better to try and start directly with an internship in a bank rather than in a corporate treasury, even if it’s LVMH?
Thanks a lot for your insights — I’m really trying to plan this year in a smart way to maximize my chances for a long-term career in trading.
Happy to provide more info if needed.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:
Solid Experience for Investment Banks:
An internship in LVMH's corporate treasury team, particularly focused on FX and interest rate trading/hedging, is a strong experience. LVMH is a globally recognized brand, and working in their treasury team demonstrates exposure to real-world financial markets and risk management. While it’s not directly within an investment bank, the skills you gain (e.g., understanding FX markets, hedging strategies, and interest rate dynamics) are highly transferable and valued by top-tier banks like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley.
Pathway to S&T or Structuring:
This internship could indeed help you break into Sales & Trading (S&T) or structuring roles at a tier 1 bank. The key is how you position your experience. Highlighting your hands-on exposure to trading and hedging strategies, as well as your ability to manage financial risks for a multinational corporation, will resonate well with recruiters in these areas. However, keep in mind that networking and demonstrating a strong understanding of the specific products and markets relevant to S&T or structuring will also be crucial.
Corporate Treasury vs. Bank Internship:
Starting with a corporate treasury internship at LVMH is not a bad move, especially if you don’t have a direct offer from a bank yet. It’s a prestigious name and provides a unique perspective on financial markets from a corporate angle. That said, if your ultimate goal is trading, securing a second internship directly within a bank’s S&T division would be ideal. Banks often value prior experience in their own environment, so transitioning to a bank for your second internship would maximize your chances of landing a full-time role post-graduation.
Strategic Advice:
- If you secure the LVMH internship, leverage it to build a strong foundation in FX and IR trading. Use this experience to network aggressively with professionals in S&T at top banks.
- For your second internship, aim for a role directly in a bank’s trading or structuring division. This will round out your profile and make you a competitive candidate for full-time roles.
- During your LVMH internship, focus on quantifying your achievements (e.g., size of hedges managed, cost savings achieved) and developing technical skills (e.g., Excel, VBA, Bloomberg).
This approach balances gaining a prestigious corporate experience with positioning yourself for a long-term career in trading. Good luck!
