There are tons of people in S&T with completely random majors so just do whatever you enjoy the most. If what you enjoy the most is finance or econ, study that. If you choose something else, just read WSJ and make sure you know about the financial markets.
The senior trader on my desk has a history degree. Study what you love. Personality and networking matters more. You just have to show that you are teachable.
In my opinion unless you're a STEM major (which would set you apart, albeit only to a certain degree) it doesn't matter. Pretty much all finance can be self-taught and most desks are fine with you coming in with 0 background as long as they believe you are eager and willing to learn.

although I will say the other comments are accurate. Spoke with an exec director in trading at a US BB who majored in piano performance. Takes all kinds. However, if you want to be a quant, piano will not work
agree with most the above: figure out what falls in the Venn of what you like most and are best at..
You see the most finance or econ majors of any but really I think the poly sci/history majors have the biggest edge in understanding market makeup, structures and cycles.

Engineering, Comp Sci, Mathematics (especially Statistics) are usually better options
Financial Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science/Econometrics

Mathematical Economics (per your post) sounds like a really good option. If you want to get into prop trading then statistics and familiarity using computer programs for data analysis is pretty important. I'd imagine there'd be a lot of that in the Mathematical Econ program.
