Based on the most helpful WSO content, there isn't a single "best" degree for physical commodity trading, but certain fields are more commonly pursued by successful professionals in the industry. Here are some insights:

  1. Common Degrees:

    • Economics & Commerce
    • International Business
    • Logistics
    • Engineering (especially in Europe)
    • Accounting
  2. Specialized Education:

    • Diplomas in Maritime Shipping are also valued, particularly in Asia.
    • Programs like the Master of Arts in International Trading, Commodity Finance & Shipping at Université de Genève are highly regarded, as they combine academic rigor with practical experience in Geneva, a hub for physical trading.
  3. Key Considerations:

    • While a degree from a top university can help you get shortlisted, physical commodity trading is a results-driven field. Networking and practical experience often outweigh academic credentials.
    • Degrees that provide a strong foundation in international logistics, supply chain management, or commodity markets can be particularly advantageous.
  4. Alternative Pathways:

    • If you're already gaining work experience in trading desks, leveraging that experience and building relationships with traders/employers can be just as critical as your degree choice.

Ultimately, choose a degree that aligns with your interests and strengths while keeping in mind the relevance to the trading industry.

I see alot of the Econ major + CS/Math minor, if its not that then people will have a STEM major with an Econ/Finance minor.

Do what you find the most interesting and something practical. The best people in commodities are really passionate about whatever it is they do, school is the same way.

Just remember that HR holds a quadruple engineering major's GPA to the same standard as a management major's.

I agree with what everyone has said here regarding the top courses.
Pick the one you're most interested. I think the top ones have pretty similar prospects. You're hit rate won't change if you study Econ over Maths/Physics. After that the real work starts of landing first internship.

Maths, physics and engineering keep quant options open but are harder. Economics is a lot easier to study so if you definitely dont want to do quant then it's a good choice.
