VC Case Studies

Hi All,

Potentially have an upcoming VC/Growth Equity case study for a Climate/Industrial Tech focused investor they tend to focus on Series B onwards but have participated in Series A and Seed rounds. They mostly invest in businesses that are capital intensive (energy and natural resources value chain).

Would be really really grateful if anyone would be kind enough to share any previous cases they have encountered - this can be across any sector and any stage to be honest, I'm just very keen to get as much practice in as possible beforehand.

Thanks so much!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and tips for preparing for a VC/Growth Equity case study, especially for a Climate/Industrial Tech-focused investor:

  1. Understand the Sector Dynamics:

    • Climate and Industrial Tech investors often deal with capital-intensive businesses, particularly in energy and natural resources. Familiarize yourself with the value chain in these industries, including key drivers like regulatory trends, technological advancements, and capital requirements.
  2. Focus on Series B and Later Rounds:

    • Since the investor focuses on Series B onwards, ensure you understand metrics like revenue growth, unit economics, and scalability. For earlier rounds (Series A and Seed), the focus might shift to product-market fit and founder vision.
  3. Case Study Preparation:

    • While no specific case studies are directly shared in the WSO dataset, you can practice by building financial models and conducting due diligence. For example:
      • Create a DCF model for a capital-intensive business.
      • Analyze market sizing and competitive positioning.
      • Evaluate the risks and opportunities in scaling a business within the energy or natural resources sector.
  4. Resources for Practice:

    • The Venture Capital Bootcamp offered by WSO includes modules on cap table modeling, ARR, and term sheets, which could be highly relevant.
    • If you're looking for examples of pitch decks or financial models, platforms like AirTree’s Open Source VC page or Slidebean might provide templates to cross-check your work.
  5. Key Skills to Highlight:

    • For capital-intensive industries, emphasize your ability to assess long-term capital needs, understand technical trends, and evaluate execution risks.
    • If the firm also participates in earlier rounds, showcase your ability to interface with technical founders and assess thematic investment opportunities.

Unfortunately, no specific case studies are directly available in the WSO dataset for your exact scenario. However, leveraging the above strategies and resources should help you prepare effectively. Good luck!
