AM--Asia to London

Hi guys:

First time poster to the forum, and I was wondering if anyone could kindly comment on the likelihood of going from AM in Asia to AM/hedgefund in London please. I'm currently working at an AM in Asia, with 2 years of experience as an investment analyst. I'm interested in moving to London because of the location and the better exposure to a larger/more experienced investment community there. Given that I'm quite junior, what would be the best way to make this move? I have heard that headhunters might prefer people with more experience, and lateral opportunities for more junior people (especially across different locations) are not commonly covered by them. Could someone comment on the validity of his statement, and recommend some good headhunters for this kind of situations please? Also, what's the best way for juniors to move from one firm to another within AM? (Mostly for fit and cultural reasons here; pay isn't as important as loving the work and the team for me at this point). I'm not sure where information on needs for junior investment roles are most commonly distributed--I was just thinking company websites (I thought firms might be less willing to spend money to hire headhunters for junior roles, please correct me if I'm wrong), and any tips on how to move across firms and/or across locations would be really appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Researchresearch:

Thank you for your reply. Just curious--did you move from UK to Asia after college/ MBA, or did you move from a job in UK to a job in Asia? How did you find the transition? Which place do you think offers better prospect for young professionals? I've never worked in UK, but from what I have heard (from my firm/industry in any case...) UK is more likely have better quality/more experienced investors, and more visibility to decision makers from within firms.

Thanks

I moved there without a job after doing a MS finance, to improve my language skills and network. Took me a year to get the kind of job I wanted. Probably not something you would consider doing/need to do as you already have good experience

My plan is a few years in Asia, then go back to London (probably via MBA) where hopefully my experience will be valued, as it should be for you. London is the financial centre of Europe, if not the world, so top quality talent will naturally gravitate there. It's also the best city in the world IMO so I hope you can make your way there!
