AM Interview Process?

Hey everyone,

I have been interviewing for a high yield research role with a large AUM asset manager. Things went well. Had 6-7 interviews spread over the course of 2 months or so.

it’s been 3.5-4 weeks since my last round. They told me that their process tends to be slow, but at this point surely there’s 0% chance right? I followed up with HR last week, and they said that they are finishing up interviews and will provide an update as soon as possible.

4 weeks between rounds just seems pretty long to me. Is this common in asset management or are they just ghosting me?

Hi ValuationGuy98, whoops, looks like nobody chimed in here.... maybe one of these discussions below is relevant:

I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.

I think it really depends on how busy the team is, as well as a number of other factors like how early did you apply relative to other applicants.  It's definitely possible that they already have narrowed the list down to a small subset but are interviewing you just in case.

Out of all interviews I had, the AM one definitely took the longest, because I was interviewing for a role within a very small team and they have limited time.  I was told I was one of the earliest to apply and get interviewed.  The whole process lasted 2.5 months including my signing, so I imagine the other people they were in conversations with had to wait a long time.

Unfortunately, I'd say extremely unlikely. Firms know when then know. Likely what is happening...is you're not bad enough to out right ding so they are selfishly keeping you on the line in the off chance their preferred candidate(s) in the pipe don't work out for whatever reason. I have been in this position and its frustrating because you still have hope despite the odds stacked against you. Of course maybe what they are saying is true...but again...usually when  you have a candidate you really like you make an offer quick.

I've had full super days, some I've even traveled for, where I didn't hear back yes/no even with HR follow ups - which is completely unprofessional especially when you are asking someone to bail on work for a day, but that's what industry we live in.

Will second this, had this happen to me in a few processes when I was interviewing for a new role ~1 year ago. Kept getting the classic "we are still working through out process/you are in consideration" when asked, but then both ended up saying I was their second choice or was edged out by another candidate with more experience. On the flip side, when I ended up receiving an offer, I was told within ~3 days of the final round, and for a previous job I found out the next day. Sorry that you are in this position. It sucks but you will find something eventually, if you are being kept on the hook it is for a reason, something will come up for you.

Agreed. On paper I’m certainly unqualified for the role so didn’t really expect an offer, but would’ve expected to hear back one way or another after using so much time on several interview rounds. Like 8 interviews total spread over 1.5 months.

Everything went swimmingly until I replied “Yes ma’am” to a female interviewer who proceeded to lecture me. “Yes you’d be a subordinate but it’s unnecessary and not appreciated to call someone ma’am and make them feel old”… Chick was 50+ at least and wouldn’t let it go.

I'll agree with others here and say it's probably very unlikely but not impossible. I've heard of people in the program I work in at a large AM that heard that they received an offer for the job up to four weeks afterwards, but that is absolutely the exception, not the norm. Rarely does my company get back to people more than two weeks after a super-day interview.

ke18sb is probably right that they are waiting for candidates who were given offers to potentially turn down their offers before giving you yours. If you're really interested in your situation, I don't think it would hurt to email HR though. Wish you the best of luck with the process!

Thanks for the input.

ive followed up with HR a couple of times with no meaningful update. Ended up emailing the Director directly a couple of weeks ago. He sincerely apologies for the lack of communication and said that they hoped to have an update the following week.

Crickets the following week. It’s very discouraging considering the interviews mostly went extremely well. Answered technical questions well and had great rapport with all but one interviewer.

Its discouraging for sure but really getting a job is hard. Its likely not that you didn't do well but rather someone is a more specific fit due direct experience, maybe there was a referral, maybe older, maybe younger, etc. I think for many jobs, especially as you move up, its not really the best candidate wins in that most candidates are good - its the one with the specific fit whatever that may be. Keep applying and interviewing well and you'll get something, who knows maybe you'll luck out with this.

6-7 interviews? Given how small teams tend to be that will mean you could've interviewed with almost everyone on that given team. Are you not able to reach out individually to one of them to ask for a heads up? I'll be entirely honest though it seems like they're stringing you along as it really shouldn't take that long and that many interviews spread across such a wide period of time to know if you're the guy or not

Yeah I’ve followed up with HR and nothing.

Followed up with the main boss 3 weeks ago and got an apology for lack of communication. Said he hoped to have an update the following week. Then nothing.

Followed up with a mid level analyst today and he said he doesn’t know what’s going on but will talk to the director next time he sees him and get back to me.

Finally got an update.

I was dinged. Pretty discouraged currently.

I went to the state-iest of state schools and I live in a tier 2 city with limited opportunity. Felt like this was a great way to get my career in the right direction. I’m married and wifey won’t even consider moving somewhere else bc she’s close with her mom who lives down the street from us.

Hoping another opportunity will arise in my city eventually :(
