Australian military to IB?

G’day, I’m from America with dual citizenship serving in the Australian Army. I’m in the infantry and will be trying for special forces in a few years. If everything goes to plan I’ll be getting out at around age 30 at which then I’ll be going to uni for something finance related to try and break into IB. My question to fellow Aussies is is breaking into IB a realistic goal at that age provided I have the grades, skills, and whatnot required? I did really well in high school in the US and got into some target schools but I really want to serve in the Australian Army because I LOVE Australia and have a long line a military service in the family. Also how do employers view prior military experience in Australia?

If you're only starting your finance studies at 30, unfortunately it will be nigh impossible for you to break into any of the formal analyst training programs at an IB. Banks tend to go for cookie cutter backgrounds and are especially cutthroat in oz. And while a military background is somewhat favourably looked upon, it's just too late to start training someone at that age. There may be other avenues for you in PWM, credit or big 4 bank. But I think M&A or coverage will be hard. You'll likely need a very close connection who is also a senior MD to go into bat for you.
