Bankers - How many coffee chats / phone calls do you take on a monthly/annual basis?

I'm curious to know how much you guys give back to students and recent graduates who are interested in working in your group / in the industry.

Do you only do coffee chats when you're looking to hire a new analyst/associate?

Do you do it to give back?

Did how often you went on coffee chats change depending on what level you were (analyst vs associate vs VP)?

Cheers

Depends on my schedule and who is reaching out - definitely ramps up during recruiting season, which is expected. Probably averages to 1 every 2ish weeks over the course of a year, usually phone chats and not coffees (including repeat convos w/ the same person).

I took more when I was an analyst and wanted to actively help students from my alma mater, but then quickly realized that was a waste of time given how non-target of a school it was and most students had no idea what investment banking entailed.

Now I'm still more than happy to talk to people, but only as long as they're the one reaching out. I've really moved to a quality over quantity mindset now in general - I talk to fewer people, but spend more time with each (helping edit resumes, deep interview question prep, etc.), which I think is more productive / rewarding for everyone involved.

I respond to everyone from my alma mater, but for random outreach, reasons I don't respond are usually: 1) LinkedIn request w/ no message and 2) if there is a message (whether on LinkedIn or email), it is clearly a pure copy and paste w/ absolutely nothing personalized about the outreach at all.
