Best places to buy a suit in London

Hey guys,

Does anybody know of a decent store to buy affordable yet stylish suits at in London? I'm looking to spend max 400GBP and I want a 2-button suit with a slim-ish fit. Any ideas?

Thanks, JM

ClarkeyPaul Smith.

Only if you're not too tall.

Try hopping on the train to Bicester Village.

if you're going for off the rack forget about hight street brands like paul smith.

Hackett and Gieves & Hawkes make good suits, with italian and british fabrics.

I particularly like the hackett Loro Piana's (120s) and their fabrics woven in Biella (110s) not too high of a thread count for everyday use, look and feel great too.

Once again, bespoke is always a better choice, and will last you longer

ametistaPlease, three buttons.

I also wear three button suits, and love them, especially for more formal occasions. But a 2 button has a certain sporty feel to it and is great for everyday...

Charles tyrwhitt makes great shirts for around $50. never owned one of their suits but online they go for $500. they have a store on jermyn street.

jmdudeok thanks guys, much appreciated.

on Gieves & Hawkes' website, all the suits were priced at 800 quid and up. do they have any sales or discounts usually?

they do have a big sale in January where you can find most of their suits around GBP 500. Really great deal, if you can wait until then. Let us know on here if you try asuitthatfits.co.uk and what you think of them in terms of cut and fabrics...

I wasn't joking when I suggested Bicester Village. Always a sale, all top names, so do yourself a favor and check it out.

acs_londonYou just missed all the sales at Charles Tyrwhitt, Hawes & Curtis etc.

If you went on a random day during the year to Charles Tyrwhitt and you miss a sale then that can safely be considered a black swan event.

I have never heard of Charles Tyrwhitt not having a "sale." I suspect Nassim Talib is going to want to talk to ACS

jmdudeWhen ordering bespoke suits is it normal for it to take 3-8 weeks? Supposedly, thats the case with asuitthatfits.co.uk... Any insights?

Also, Oreos- just found out Bicester Village is quite far out from the city. Im guessing the main advantage of shopping there vs. the city/oxford street is that there are more sales?

Yes, a bespoke suit is being made from scratch. It is normal for it to take that long; it's not like it's being pulled off of a rack, cut to your exact specifications.

Everything there is always on sale. It's last season stuff (which if you care about you need a slap, but I'm sure you don't). So Ralph Lauren; on sale, Armani; on sale, Hackett; on sale, Zegna; on sale......

Hi JM dude, perfectly normal for bespoke to actually take 6-8 weeks (three weeks is a little quick and you might want to be cautious). A suit that fits is not a bespoke tailor, and too many of our clients haven't had good experiences for our liking. I really would go for the Gieves/Hackett stores and see what they have, but for your budget you are unlikely to find a good bespoke that lasts.

However, contrary to another post, bespoke will not always outlast off the rack, it very much depends on the quality of make of each...you get what you pay for after all! Rob

1) I really like SuitSupply so if you like the suit that you already have from them, I would stick with them.

2) Charcoal

3) Charles Tyrwhitt and Thomas Pink - probably look elsewhere for shoes though. Also you can buy ties thetiebar.com if you're looking to save some money there.

4) Can't really go wrong buying outerwear in London although quality stuff can be expensive - almost all of my outwear is black but a dark navy/charcoal color can also look nice.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for that.

In the end I bought some shirts and socks from Charles Tyrwhitt and a few ties from T.M. Lewin (I don't feel like ordering ties online as I like to feel the material before purchasing them).

For the suit I will indeed probably get one from SuitSupply - it's probably one of the best price/quality offers out there!

I still haven't bought the shoes but it seems like Loake should be a good alternative.

Crockett and Jones or bust

Thomas Pink is a little bit cheaper than in the states and turnbull&asser makes the best shirts (either 200 or even 300$+ though) other "cheap" alternatives would be Harvie and Hudson, Hawes and Curtis and Hilditch & Key (all on the jermyn street) If you also need shoes make sure to check out Loake (200 Pounds for great shoes on par or above allen edmonds)

Charles Tyrwhitt are really good for the price in my opinion - and they look great too. You won't need 5 suits as an analyst - 3 should be plenty, especially if you get 2 pants per suit (since you'll be in shirt and pants, no jacket, most of the time anyway). Save your money for other things

I'd probably check out Suitsupply, since you're in London anyway. Same price, same construction (Half-canvassed), but a better looking IMO, and way more options/models.

Go in and try some on. No black, you don't work at Zara Wear a collared shirt and dress shoes to get the best idea Get 3 and use the money you spared on getting alterations. Make sure the hem has the break you want and get the sleeves adjusted to fit you. These are off the rack and is needed. Ask them about putting a silk saddle in the pants If they don't give you proper shaped hangers, they should, buy them yourself Buy two pairs of dress shoes, one black, one brown. Get shoe trees for both of them Buy leather belts to match your shoes, leather not that cheap crap your security pass will chip away at it Go easy on buying extra suit pants, you'll need a larger waist after six months

100% wool. Always. Always. Always. If you want to mix in some cashmere that's fine too although too much and you have tissue paper. Worried about durability? Read up on suit construction, thread count, etc. so you can determine what wool and construction you need. Also, IMO don't buy a suit from a place that doesn't make suits. FC has never been known to be a suit tailor.

And although you may not have noticed, your polyester probably smells awful, synthetic materials are gross.

Thanks for the reply.

Have used 150-170 thread count before - 90-95% wool. Stitched from a good tailor (but not the Row). A couple of trousers had issues due to daily wear - I have 4 suits that I rotate and no rugged use.

This will be a good trial I guess so will buy it next week. Have owned ready made jackets before but not suits so just wanna give this a try.. I've looked at the material it doesn't smell. Though I agree synthetic materials to wear can be gross.

I was told by the sales rep that FC was actually known for suits first then came everything else.

Anyone else with opinions?
