Blackrock - Institutional Client Business - Business Management vs. another offer
Hi guys
I'm currently evaluating two offers I have on the plate to start an Analyst position in September after graduating here in London:
- The first one is at Blackrock - within Institutional Client Business (ICB) and it's within the "Business Management" team
- The second one is in another top 5 AM firm (AUM > 1tn) in their business management and strategy team
As a personal impression, I got for BlackRock that:
- it's definetely a great company, high-paced full of smart people, even during the interviews you could feel that
- I've understood that there are three teams working for ICB: relationship managers (sales), product manager and business managers. In the business management team you work as the "liaison" between departments but they told me you work directly with sales in their floor (not as sales support as they also have sales support), sometimes also helping the clients and driving initiatives such as strategy, planning, management etc.
- Having looked at Linkedin, I've seen that people working in this team have very good CVs. I think BlackRock call them "COO" teams - it's middle office but working directly with sales so do you think would it be possible a move into FO if that would make sense? Salaries in Glasdoor are comparable to the ones in FO...
do you know someone who is already working here?
The other position is within a large AM firm, team of 4 in which the MD reports directly to the CEO EMEA. Interviews were definetely less hard than BlackRock and I got the impression that the job even at higher levels is very much reporting, not real "strategy". They said I wouldn't do strategic analysis but more reporting stuff liaising with key people in the deparment, although the position is directly in the EMEA strategy office.
Do you guys have any first thoughts on these two positions?
Thanks!!!
I don't think you'll regret taking the BlackRock offer. With funds flowing towards passive, might be the best place to be if the other are active. American here - is BlackRock located by Lloyds of London? I remember touring London but don't remember seeing their building.
Thanks Tippy! Do you know the position exactly? It's close to the sales team but they do business strategy and I wouldn't want to fall into some boring back-office stuff (although from interviews, people seemed very smart so don't think it'll be the case).
BlackRock office is in the City, close to the Bank of England... they have a whole building and it's a very cool office (especially meeting rooms at higher floors, with some art pictures inside :-) )
Hi guys - any other suggestions?
Hello, I have an interview with the Blackrock ICB team later this week - are there any tips you can offer, based on your experience, to help me prepare best? You mentioned it was more difficult than your other offer, could you expand on this at all?
Thank you in advance, really appreciate it.
