Business Casual to an Interview??
"Regarding attire, please feel free to dress business casual. There is no need to be formal."
This is a trap, right? What would you wear? Suit and no tie?

Just wear a suit and tie. Can't go wrong.
Depends....I assume this is a smaller firm. If that is what the email from HR (or from the sound of it a person in the group) says then I suggest a suit, colored shirt (dark blue, stripped, ect) and no tie....That second line about no need to be formal...sounds to me like you may insult them slightly if you go in full suit and tie. Put a tie in your pocket as a backup.
Unless it's someone like Jane Street, go in a suit.
Suit, always.
If they were silent on the issue, sure, you always err on the formal side. However, they told you to wear business casual, so listen to what they told you. Suit, no tie.
Agree with above. Besides, nice pressed suit and crisp light blue shirt without a tie will look very professional. You did the right thing by asking HR how to dress now follow their advice.
If they had simply said that you can feel free to dress business casual, then I would say that you should stick with a suit. However, considering they went out of their way to further that statement by letting you know that the suit is not necessary (in other words not what they'd prefer), I would definitely respect their preference and go business casual. Suit without a tie is fine - but a nice button down, pants and blazer will definitely do the trick as well. Dress to impress and remember to relax. The reason for the lack of suit is probably not only because it is how they operate and are comfortable, but also to get you feeling more comfortable.
Where is this interview?
If you are on the west coast, do not wear a jacket of any kind, there are plenty of hedge funds where people wear jeans and sneakers to work on the west coast, if they specifically said not to wear a suit I would guess these guys are very casual.
I used to work at a fund where the only rule for dress was no shorts or t-shirts on weekdays. I've had meetings with CEOs wearing torn up jeans and a pair of old New Balances while they've been in wso/">suits. If we said not to wear a suit and you showed up in a blazer we would laugh and think you were uptight, that was west coast.
If you are in NYC or Chicago I would go with blazer and no tie.
Business Casual Interview? (Originally Posted: 02/07/2018)
Off cycle superday coming up. Email says business casual attire. Should I a) go with business casual to show that I’ve clearly read the email b) go with formal business attire to “dress to impress”.
I’m thinking suit and no tie is a good medium, but just wanted to hear others thoughts. Thanks!
Agreed, suit with no tie.
can always bring a tie in your pocket just in case
Agree with everyone above. A suit with no tie (though you could always have one handy for back pocket purposes ;P).
business casual, or just be safe? (Originally Posted: 10/20/2013)
Hi,
i got an email informing me that the pre-night dinner at my final rounds with a consulting firm would be business casual.
i was thinking peplum top, pants or pencil skirt but maybe going formal is just the safest way to go.
overdressing wouldn't be an issue right?
thanks!
Go jacket, no tie.
I always thought business casual meant suit and no tie
you two realise that's a girl writing? :)
lol, i thought i didn't need to specify given the nature of my post but.
i am a girl. wondering if i should just play it safe and don a mansuit for the night.
Dress business casual, do not overdress. You want to fit in and adhere to instructions.
no jacket, but fancier than normal bus casual if thats possible. a nicer outfit or something
