CAIA Question and Answer Thread

Greetings to all,

My name is Ian Cappelletti and I am a representative from the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association (http://caia.org). CAIA is expanding its outreach efforts in order to better inform financial professionals working with alternative investments and all others who would benefit from taking the CAIA exams. Here's some background on our organization:

Founded in 2002, the Association is the sponsoring body for the CAIASM designation. Recognized globally, the designation certifies one’s mastery of the concepts, tools and practices essential for understanding alternative investments and promotes adherence to high standards of professional conduct. Our professional credential is earned through completion of the CAIA educational program – focused exclusively on alternative investments, specializing in the areas of Hedge Funds, Managed Futures and Commodities, Private Equity, and Real Estate.

Please use this space to ask whatever questions you may have about the CAIA program and I will be happy to answer them. I will also periodically update this thread with CAIA related events, news, etc.

Very best!

Ian: Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grins? Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain.... can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Thank you for your interest all!

@lxwarr30 The CAIA Association has a very strong network indeed. With now over 5 000 members and 14 chapters globally, candidates and members have much to gain from our frequent and diversified networking events. As for positions held by CAIAs, there is certainly a gamut: we are proud to count junior analysts and portfolio managers as well vice presidents of international firms and seasoned institutional investors in our ranks.

@bortz911 CAIA doesn't have an official position on rhetorical questions posed in Disney films.

A very good question! Although there is some overlap between the programs, there are also some very important differences between the two. Here is a prepared blurb that addresses the issue:

"The CFA program follows a broad, generalist approach of presenting all asset classes including equities, fixed-income securities, derivatives and alternative investments; incorporating aspects of accounting and regulation not present in the CAIA program. CAIA, on the other hand, focuses exclusively on the alternative asset space and the unique differences found within the vast suite of structures and strategies currently available. Broadly speaking, the CFA program teaches one how to analyse and manage portfolios comprised of individual securities whereas the CAIA program teaches one how to analyse and manage portfolios comprised of funds. One final point: the CFA program is a three-level, minimum three-year program whereas the CAIA program is a two-level, minimum one-year program."

Additionally, CAIA has its own textbooks, the Knowledge Series, written just for candidates. The only overlap is the CFA Standards of Practice, or 10% of the curriculum.

If you have any further questions about how the CAIA program compares to the CFA's, feel free to ask in this thread.

@ Walkerr

I'd be happy to elaborate further about who is prime to pursue the CAIA with the help of some other official content:

"Alternative investments exhibit unique risk and return attributes not found in the traditional space, thus affording investment managers greater flexibility in fine-tuning their investment strategies to fit their views, objectives and market conditions. But as is true for any rapidly developing industry, there are significant challenges, not least of which is keeping apprised of and understanding the rapid changes that are taking place.

The key to keeping pace with industry change lies in continuing education, and I know of no better means of gaining this expertise than through the CAIA program, which is the only designation specifically for the AI space."

Hope this is helpful! Any further questions are welcome. :)
