Can a sophomore Operations internships lead to an IB internship in junior year?

Hey people,

I am a first semester junior (Graduate in December 2017, so I have a junior summer next year?) at an Ivy League school and was offered an Operation Summer Analyst position at a BB firm. I was wondering if I would be able to leverage this opportunity for a Summer Analyst position next year in IB or do you think it makes sense to look for something else? I only have one week to response to the offer.

Thanks in advance.
Josh

I'm a non-target. I had a finance internship last summer at a BB and managed to land a S&T internship this summer at a different BB.

There is no question that you can land a IB internship next summer even if you accept this ops internship. You just have to be very resourceful in terms of networking and knowing your techincals.

As a sophomore, absolutely take the BB ops internship. Don't worry about being stuck in ops..you're a sophomore. You'll have a great name on your resume, which will help when gearing up for SA recruiting for junior summer. You will have opportunities to network within the bank and you'll be in a great position to get an interview for IBD next year. Don't waste your time looking for something else, you're already ahead of the game.

I got an offer this week from a BB for IBD Operations. It's a structured SA program that is meant for Juniors, but I managed to get an interview as a Sophomore and got the position. So, my question is should I accept this offer, or look for something that is more related to what I want, like ibanking. At the end of the program when everyone else is getting full-time offers, is it possible, provided I perform well, to get an offer for an interview as a SA in IBD of the same bank the following year since I am only a soph? How hard is it to break into IBD from Ops? Thanks.
What kind of internship are you expecting to get as a sophomore that you would be hesitant on denying an offer to work for IBD Operations at a BB that is meant for juniors?

And yes, if you are smart, you do your work well and they like your personality, there's always that chance.

I'd certainly say IBD at a small bank is better... as you'll actually learn / do something instead of just be in ops - which has no relevance to anything. That said, I'd think that GS opps isn't that bad a thing to do as a sophmore if you can't find another internship.

Boutiques always win, but if you are stuck with GS ops as a sophomore don't worry. The most important thing is to utilize the low hours you'll be working to network like crazy and start to develop actual relationships with as many contacts as possible. And halfway through (if your school is near a major city), start cold-calling those boutqiues for an unpaid fall internship.

Reaching out to contacts with no ib experience is great because when you finally line that unpaid boutique internship up, they can see your development and its more impressive.

You're a sophomore, anything that shows your interest in finance is great. If you do the ops thing, make sure to network with the people in IBD.

I doubt it. You could place it within your shtick as a "great experience" for XYZ reasons, but you were "left wanting" for live deal exposure. It's probably an atypical choice though. Someone scanning your resume for the first time 10 seconds before an interview might draw the kind of conclusion you're trying to avoid - you'll want to have a sentence or two rehearsed beforehand to contextualize it.

But getting paid is underrated on this board. I can understand how people are willing to take unpaid gigs for resume content - I've done it too - but cash is awesome. And it may be worth taking this "hit" for the cash - and I don't really think it's a negative given you're a '14.

What would you be doing within OPS? If you could be supporting a coverage or product group, that would be ideal obviously.

No in fact it will help you tremendously compared to your classmates who had bullshit finance roles getting coffee at their dad's company. Just be ready to explain what you learned and why you want to do IBD instead of ops. I would have killed for a brand name ops internship my sophomore summer.
