Canada -> US: Recruit FT or Lateral?

Looking for some advice here from people who have any knowledge of recruiting/visa processes or have made the Canada-US move themselves.

I’m an incoming SA at Canadian boutique, non-target school. Looking to make the move to NY in the relatively near future.

Would the better option be to attempt to network over the spring/summer to recruit for full-time in NY, or recruit FT in Canada and hope to lateral after a year or so?

Given my non-target background, I’m thinking it might be more difficult to recruit in NY without deal experience at a solid shop.

Thanks in advance.
