Who should I address the cover letter to?
For BB/Boutiques, who should I address the cover letter to? I researched a bit and checked linkedin, and the only names I could pull off the websites are the names of the MD and Vice President. Which one should I address the letter to? I don't want to write: " To whom It May Concern" because thats just useless.
If the job listing has a recruiter's name, use that. Otherwise, "To whom it may concern" is your best option. You might think it's useless, but addressing your cover letter to an MD would be ridiculous.
Cover letters are largely ignored, anyway - don't sweat this too much.
Yea, don't address it to some random MD if you are sending it to HR. See if you can find the name of the head of HR and address it to that person if you REALLY need to put a name on it. But you are fine sending it to "To whom it may concern", it isn't ridiculous. And quimby is right, unless you have a personal contact that you are sending it to nobody is going to read the cover letter.
Thanks! What about a smaller firm? They don't have director of human resources and campus recruiting, but they do have director of operations and director of administration. Which one should I address it to?
you can address it to the firm
Dear recruiting manager,
..........
If you don't address it to a specific name, what do you write for the address/name paragraph?
Dear Sir or Madam,
i used to run into exactly the same problems and it would annoy the hell out of me...through ocr, I now have details of most banks contact info for ib and s&t campus recruiting...so if you (or anyone else needs this), please pm me
alternatively, you could use linked in to search for stuff like campus recruiting or hr or campus investment banking etc and get a name within that companies profile...
for their physical address (particularly boutiques/MM etc) just go to their websites and get it from under contact details or just google map it (eg Moelis near NYC etc)
or you can just pm me and if I have what you need, i'll just reply back with it
I'm applying for the IB Summer Analyst position at J.P. Morgan and the switchboard operator that answered the phone said I should just address it to J.P. Morgan Human Resources.
Thoughts?
I've sent every cover letter to Human Resources when I've not specifically been told to address it to a particular person.
excel_ monkey: yeah that sounds great.
no homo: did you just address it as : " To Human Resources:" ?
Dear Human Resources

Addressing Cover Letter to Unknown Recepient (Originally Posted: 11/03/2014)
I am preparing to send a cover letter (electronically) in response to an open job position for an internship. It is a very large company, and I cannot find the name of the person who I definitively know will be the person reading it. There are two names listed for recruiting contacts, but again, I'm not sure if these are definitely the correct names. I have heard that starting "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Hiring Team" are fairly safe, albeit impersonal options. If I do address it in that manner, thoughts on if this will help or hurt? Any general comments will also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I always just address it to "Dear Recruiting Coordinator"...
Do you have any contacts in the firm? I'd ask them.
I guess the real question is: is it looked down on to have the greeting read: Dear Hiring Manager/Team?
I've usually gone with Hiring Manager but "Sir or Ma'am" can work as well if you think it fits the firm's culture. For a "very large company" I'd feel pretty confident about Hiring Manager as they probably do actually have such a person.
Why not "Dear Sir or Madam"? I thought that would be the proper adress if you are not sure who the recipient is
Cover Letter Address? (Originally Posted: 03/03/2011)
tried searching, but haven't really found an answer to this question. who should you address the cover letter to when submitting an online application? The application requires a cover letter that answers a specific question, and I feel like addressing the letter with "Dear Bank X Recruiter(s)" is too impersonal. thanks
To Whom It May Concern:
?
Shredder
Definitely not "To Whom it May Concern" ... "Dear Shredder" might work - I like that, WalMartShopper.
Don't sweat the details on this one, the content is what matters most. Just start it (no Dear or To):
[insert bank name here] Recruiting,
To whom it may concern always works. I also would use the name of their head recruiter or HR person if available
"To Whom it May Concern" sounds like the start of a suicide note.
Who should I address my cover letter to? (Originally Posted: 11/01/2013)
So, I had to go through my career services in school before being able to apply to an SA position. I was contacted now that I would be able to apply directly to the position but now I'm not sure who I should address my cover letter too. In my original application through my school's career services portal I addressed it to an alumni who was currently in a VP position at the bank I'm applying to but now that I'm applying through the company's website I'm wondering if I should direct my cover letter to the same individual or if I should be more general? Maybe towards the recruiting coordinator? any help?
thanks

Address it to the "recruiting team"
Why not use your brain and check for a recruiters name on LinkedIn or call the firm up and ask? And people like you will get offers... I'm shocked.

When sending a cover letter in with an application/resume to a big company where you don't know anyone, who do you address the cover letter to? "to whom.." or "hiring committee" or what
I usually write "Dear Recruiter:" or "Dear Prospective Employer:."
I usully just say Dear Hiring Manager, "to whom it may concern is kinda detached", and "hiring committee" implies there is more than 1 person reading your resume"
Disclaimer: The post above has been made by someone who is not currently employed in IBD, and has not had an interview yet...
Don't know anyone with a name to send it to = not very good chances of getting in
How do you find out who's reading your cover letter so you can properly address them? (Originally Posted: 06/19/2010)
I heard that if you can find out the name of the person reading your resume, it helps a great deal to address him/her properly in your cover letter. How is it possible to find out information like that, especially in big companies? I'm currently applying to Life Technologies in Carlsbad for marketting intern, if someone has any information on who's the resume reader or if anyone can give me suggestions as to how to find out, please let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Call them.

The job listing has the name of the HR person (Senior HR Analyst) but the job description says the person will report to the Director of IT. I know the name of the Director of IT in the organization, so should I just use their name or should I use the name of the HR person?
This is for a state job if that matters, at all.

cover letter addressed to HR contact (Originally Posted: 01/23/2008)

My header for Cov. Letters goes like this:

BIG UNIT
this is fine, right? I don't ever put street addresses on, since its through E-recruiting. Let me know if this is a major issue, so I can change the format for the last two banks I apply to (i guess i'll be screwed for all the others lol)
Why are there so many dumb cover letter questions recently? I'm glad that after Mr. White's rant about stupid questions, the "What are my chances?" posts have died down, but these are almost as bad.
If you need cover letter advice, pick up a fucking guide to cover letters. There are at least a million of them on Google. These questions are honestly from Cover Letters 101.
Do you honestly think i haven't searched this forum, used a cover letter guide, used Vault, to find an answer already etc. - I'm a type A from a target. Christ, why couldn't you just answer the question on top of being a d bag?
no cover letter guide has a specific answer to the question: should I address it to the HR contact versus the division I'm applying.
For example, MS has multiple divisions and to each one I used the HR Contact as the person to address it to - maybe I should have put "Dear MS IB, or Dear MS Pub. Finance" instead.
Sorry dude but I agree with b. This is a easy question that you can solve on your own. You might want to consider:
a. Is this an e-mailed cover letter? If so, why would you put an address on at all?
b. Is this through an online application system? If so, make sure the font of your resume and cover letter are identical. If you are truely a type A from a target, you should have no problems asking your career center.
At the end of the day, the header of your cover letter is going to be entirely ignored (except if you address it to the wrong company). What matters is the content. Good luck.
If it's emailed or online you don't need to address it. C'mon, use common sense..they aren't english teachers grading your formatting.
Hey thanks for the replies, I'm not worried about the formatting, just in regards to applying online. Here is my question more specifically:
My school (mid-tier target) uses E-recruiting but ALSO requires you to submit through the firm's website. On the firm's website, each division you are applying to requires a seperate cover letter. For these cover letters, should I just use the HR contact person from the Dartmouth E-Recruiting website, or should I just put: "Dear Morgan Stanley IB" or "Dear Morgan Stanley ST"
appreciate it.
How about "Dear Sir or Madam:" and dont worry about it? geeze - I understand the type A, but you will be bald by 25 worrying about petty things like that.
try googling "do i address my cover letter to an HR contact"
seriously.
lol...already got that receding hairline = <3 rogaine
but yeah, i was asking whether we should use the campus HR contact on online applications...I don't think most of you have realized the specific nature of the question, or maybe I'm just an idiot. Its a minor detail anyways....
BTW, did you try to mask your school by saying "mid-tier target" and then the following sentence mention that you go to Dartmouth? lol
haha yes I did...well, at least you guys know that me using the term "mid-tier target" is accurate.
I've been really stressed out and dumbed from the lack of sleep the past few days, but am recuperating since I have a superday tomorrow. I've had a bunch of MM interviews out of town and stuff. Anyways, it turned out it didn't matter what I put for the cover letter address, as several of you correctly pointed out.
big unit, I love how you post in this thread completely feigning like you go to Dartmouth (you and I both know that you don't) and later end up posting about offers at Wachovia...
I guess the natural thing to do when you get called out on asking a retarded question is to "inadvertently slip" the name of a school that you don't attend to add credibility to your post.
Address on cover letter? (Originally Posted: 09/06/2011)
I read somewhere that people put their address and the address of the office they are applying to on their cover letters?
All of mine start with Dear Sir or Madam...
Should I put my address and the head office address on the cover letter? If so, where? Do you think they care if I don't? I don't see why people do it.
I always put the address of the office I'm applying to (even if HR is in another office) and put Dear Sir or Madam. The reason being that you are never sure of who is reading your Cover Letter.
I always put the address on too. In terms of addressing the recipient, I tend to just ask who I ought to address the letter to or if its vague (like Sam etc), I address Sir/Madam. If you can, phone up the office to find out, better to make an impression.
Thank you both, I'll call around tomorrow. I'll put their address top right!
Its a letter to someone, address it to them on the left.

let's say we are applying to a position in EMEA or in Asia Pacific. For the address on the cover letter, should it be the New York Global headquarters address for everything, or should we use the EMEA regional headquarters address in London for EMEA and APAC regional headquartesr address in Hong Kong for APAC?
I would put the regional headquarters address. So if you're applying to Asia, use Hong Kong address. If you're applying to North America, use NY. If you're applying to EMEA, use London. Etc.
Cover Letter Address Question (Originally Posted: 01/01/2012)
Hey guys, just trying to get a cover letter sorted out for a SA application. I know cover letters aren't read thoroughly (if at all) but I want it to be right.
I have networked a fair bit with an Associate and MD at the firm (was referred to the Associate by the MD). The Associate suggested that I submit my application to two Analysts, who he cc'd on the e-mail so I assume both are expecting to receive it.
Who do I address the cover letter to? The Associate? Two separate cover letters - one to each analyst?
Thanks in advance.
