D E Shaw's Oculus Fund (Global macro)

DE Shaw's Oculus Fund (Their hybrid quant and discretionary global macro fund) is
hiring analysts/traders.
Does anyone know anyone who's worked in this D.E. Shaw fund? Or what about at Shaw in a non-quant role? I was considering interviewing for them but then I graduated in 2008 when they actually cancelled all their recruiting spots at Stanford.

What the hell kind of standard path is there for a Global Macro analyst anyway? Doesn't seem to be one.

You'll see traders off macro desks at the big banks (FX spot, forwards, govie rates, occasionally even commodities), people from the World Bank or IMF, econ Ph.D students, etc. ... the typical macro crowd.
I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Do macro hedge funds actively recruit guys from fed/world bank/IMF, or is it more of an ad hoc basis? It make sense that rates/currencies/commodities traders from the sellside desks would transition to macro funds.

The BBs don't really have discretionary macro desks any more do they? And MMing in OTR treasuries, etc ... does it really give you the experience to formulate a macro view and execute? Given that this is D.E Shaw , there's probably some level of nerdery/quantiness that they want.

You're correct in that they don't have true discretionary desks (i.e. a purely prop group siting nowhere near the flow traders) anymore, but the agency desks do still take directionary views. That's the whole conundrum behind the Volcker legislation. "Alpha" strategies is just shorthand for a flow desk maintaining what is often significant directional exposure. I can tell you it happens for sure on FX desks, and I know it occurs on rates desks too.

Bridgewater does hire directly out of both undergrad and graduate programs. Obviously at the MBA level there's going to be an examination of the candidate's work experience, but I do know they've taken a couple from the non-MBA Master's programs at Princeton and Courant (NYU) where graduates don't have work experience. They also take undergrads, but rarely.

FernandoTorres9:
Bridgewater does not hire out of undergrad "rarely." They hire tons of students from 4 core schools: Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton. They are the #1 employer / close to the #1 employer on each of those campuses every year.

What .. no Stanford? I could have used them when I graduated ... Cunts

Greg Jensen, the co-CIO, went to dartmouth, hence why Bridgewater recruits so aggressively there.

Most of the undergrad hires are back and middle-office roles. Very few undergrads get investment associate offers.

You're telling me there are Harvard and Princeton undergrads doing Bridgewater's back and middle office work? That sounds like a difficult thing to believe.

My school--one of the four I mentioned--is sending 5 Investment Associates to Bridgewater this year.

Hey Fernando , do you know anything about the interview process for IA/ Senior IA ? Could you please PM me if you do?
