Destroy my Resume

Hey guys I'm looking for honest advice, I will tell you a little about myself. Im 24 years old, and Ive just graduated with a BA in economics from a Non-target school, and I was focused mostly on Pre-health until I just didnt want to do it anymore, and decided I should do something I like rather than chase security of having a job.

Im trying to get an entry level position, doesnt have to be IB, I would take corporate finance as well, I really want to work as an financial analyst in any capacity whether for a IB firm or a fortune 500.

I am currently studying for my CFA and a FRM and studying for Level 1 Certification in SAS, I enjoy the Quantitative side of things, especially statistics and projecting future profits based on models and using econometrics.

The downside to all this drive and enthusiasm is my health sector focused experience, and lack of any relevant financial experience, my non-target school and mediocre GPA 3.3~3.4 which I can explain from having taken and completed all Pre-Health requirements (orgo 1 & 2, physics 1 & 2, chemistry 1 & 2 and some more advanced level science classes)

Anyway here is my resume rip it up.

Dude you should be set. All you need to do is network your ass off - your school had a bunch a alumni working for J.T. Marlin. You should be able to say "I am a fucking millionaire" in no time.

Resume looks solid for non BB banking/corp fin internships IMO, your resume doesn't say superstar but that you have a strong interest in finance and you have taken steps to pursue this (CFA, Investment competition, etc). What you are really lacking here are internships with relevant work experience.

Thoughts on your resume: include grade obtained in the relevant courses, remove Systems from IT, move IT to after/before Activites, flesh out more your experiences (retrieved client info from archives doesn't sound very challenging). In your experiences maybe include osmething specific, did you make a difference, where and how?

Also shooting for an entry lvl corp fin type job without internships might be tough, you should consider non-MBB consulting roles as your pre-med experience will be seen in a much more positive light.

Just my two cents... :)

Oh I didn't know. I will try and get access to my alumni network as soon as possible. Would you guys happen to have headhunter/Recruiter info for the NYC area, I would really appreciate it help me get my resume in front of some people hopefully.

Lol Im not to concerned with being a millionaire really, I want to have a valuable skill set that commands respect one day and allows me to eventually make important decisions for a firm at the level of senior management. Im aiming high.

Yeah networking is my weak point, I wouldnt know where to start really.

First comment on WSO. I joined because you are in dire need of resume help, friend.

1) Stop using a template: get rid of the objective line 2) Get rid of "Other coursework" unless you're applying to something healthcare related 3) You don't need a whole section for computer skills - make a "Achiements, Awards, Skills, Honors, Interests, Certification etc etc section. Combine with your current "activities and interests" section. 4) Register for the CFA so you will be "Level I CFA candidate, June/December 20XX" etc 5) Write more under each experience. You need to write more than weak half liners. Talk about your accomplishments, what you contributed, how the world is so much better since you exist etc. 6) Make the headings bigger and bold - education, experience etc. 7) obviously put your GPA (understand if you omitted for these purposes), include your ACT/SAT if you did well 8) Entrepreneur for what?! There's nothing there... 9) is this not updated or what? There isn't anything for the last 2 years.. What's the deal? 10) All your experiences sound really weak. Tweak it up more.

Dude, in the spirit of constructive criticism, this is really bad. Spend some time on your resume. It's one thing about your application process that you CAN control, take advantage of that and do a good job.

I have no idea why people are saying this guy is good to go. I understand the spirit of encouragement but by lying to this guy you are actually hurting his chances. Obviously you are a bright individual but you need to really improve your resume, not only in format but also by having a few more finance-related experiences. I strongly advise that you take a look at the M&I template, also please detail your experiences. To me it looks as if you spent literally 10 minutes building the resume.

Good luck, repost the updated resume and I'm sure we will be able to help you out...

This resume definitely needs a lot of work...In addition to everything MNBanker said:

  1. I would suggest that you move your computer skills section to the very bottom. There is nothing impressive in there, why would you prioritize that over everything else?

  2. I'll knitpick a bit...wtf is Microsoft XP? If you're putting down Windows 7, then have it as Windows XP to stay consistent. I really don't remember what you're supposed to do in terms of the "tech skills" section in college, but I always thought that putting down excel, windows, outlook on your resume is like pointing out that you know how to read and write. "Proficient in Google search engine".

  3. That Entrepreneur section has to be fixed. As MNBanker pointed out, what is it exactly? It sounds like you're just selling sh*t on EBay.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

My comment about him being able to get into corp fin was aimed more at him and his actual experiences than at how his resume looks, I wholeheartedly agree with the resume advice given by Flake and MNBanker!

I really appreciate all the advice guys I really do. I know I have the aptitude for Finance and the drive, its just too bad I waited to long to decide to do what I wanted to do. It isn't that I couldn't make it into medical school or dental school, I got accepted into a few dental schools but I just didn't want to go, and spend my life cleaning teeth. Only until it was staring me straight in the face did I have the balls to say "F this I never wanted this" and face the fear of having a career that is not a certain and set but at the same time is challenging.

I hear you guys about the format, and the experience, thats the problem, I have no related work experience, I can drum up more about the experience I have but really I haven't been able to get an internship or an financial experience which is why i desperately need a break.

THe experience isn't really going to get any better as in I took a break from school and so the last two years I've been just taking classes and nothing else, and these classes burnt me out the orgo and phys etc that I never did anything else.

Im going to re-do the resume and post it again. Thanks guys I really appreciate the advice.....

oh btw should my GPA include all my classes or just focus on my major classes

My major GPA that is just including all econ classes is about 3.6, however with the pre-health classes its 3.3.

So should I just write GPA: 3.6 and leave the major part out technically it isn't wrong but may be deceptive, but if thats common practice I will use it.
