Does WFH improve your work/life balance? (Analysts)

Been reading through all the WSO investment banking reviews and just generally the sentiment seems to be that what makes the analyst years so grueling is the fact that you're holed up in the office from 8AM-late in the night. I'm wondering if the shift from WFH has significantly improved one's ability to have some free time? Of course I'm sure you're always still tied to your phone, but do you have more time to do things like exercise or play a quick game of warzone?

Also is the amount of actual work you do the same? Do you thing dealflow has stalled at all due to the pandemic (TMT and HC are probably fine lol)? Do you think at least partial WFH will become the norm in banking any time soon?

Only an intern so obv not the best source but the general consensus at least at my bank has been that people are pretty much always reachable, so it kinda gets worse in that somehow the line between work and life has been blurred even more now. I thought working from the comfort from home in casual clothes or no commute would make a huge quality of life difference, but thats just more hours to work and you still can't completely relax because you could get something to do that'll ruin the rest of your day at any moment still. My bank people are still working hard on deals and ramping up on pitches due to everything going on, so its even more busy. I think a large majority of the people I talk to would prefer to be in the office at this point and many have even though its not officially open, so I'd say most actually wouldn't prefer WFH at least everyday.

In some ways yes, in others no.

Yes, improved balance:

  • No commute and able to dress casually

  • Can run out for a quick errand in the morning or when dead, cut out 15 min of getting to car/etc

  • Take a break if needed and go for a walk or watch a show or squeeze in a workout

No, worse balance:

  • No separation of work and home

  • Hard to "turn off" at night

  • Everyone else is home so you know they're available but you don't know what they're working on, vs being in the office and seeing that people are focused on something or have had a few late nights. If you're not staffed on something with someone, no real chance to chat with them

  • Hard to keep up with new shortcuts/tips/etc

  • Overall, I feel like I haven't stopped working for the past 5 months even though I have.
