Duke MMS Admissions phone interview, chances of getting in?

Hello!

I recently applied to Duke's relatively new MMS program. My undergraduate major is Management with a minor in Business Ethics and Legal Studies at the University of Denver. I currently have a 3.7 GPA and scored a 550 on the GMAT. I have had a few internships, and served as Vice President of my fraternity. I was invited for a phone interview, and it went very well. Do you guys think I'll get in? What were your stats if you did/didn't get admitted?

Thanks!

Hey man,

Congrats on the phone interview, but I have a question. Did they ask you about your gmat score? Their average was somewhere around 660...can you shed some light?

Thanks.!

I think they would have invited you for a phone interview because of the lower gmat score. I spoke, at length with Kendra Maultsby-Mudd and she mentioned that interviews are pretty rarely sought. You're profile seems pretty well set against the people they seem to want so congrats on getting to the interview.

I applied as well. Havent heard back yet. My profile: Law undergrad (Oxford 3.5GPA), Masters from UCL Law, internship experience worldwide, qualified lawyer, working in business consultancy.

Before you ask, working as a lawyer wasnt the career I wanted in the end.

She's a really nice woman and helped me immensely before my app so hit me with a PM if you want some more insight or anything.

wow. Thanks for all the responses guys. They actually didn't ask about my gmat score in the interview. I'm hoping my GPA will help to offset the low score, but I guess we'll see.

So is the interview used for borderline cases or is it given to all students that they are considering admitting?

Yeah Kendra and Cathy over at the admissions are very nice and extremely helpful. I had the chance to meet with Cathy and I was pretty impressed with the program and I'm hoping I get in. My application is about done, I just have to take my GMAT (again).

But keep us posted on how things go, I'm curious as well on how the gmat score will factor. Either way, good luck and I hope to hear from you soon.

Anyone know how the placement record is out of this program? Is it basically a way to "buy" OCR? Does it place into IB or Consulting or something else?

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Not to be a debbie downer but my company is incredibly unhappy with the products we got from this program. We gave them entry level analyst gigs and they both rank in the bottom performance bucket against there fresh undergrad peers. From what I understand it's simply a money machine for the school and in return non-targets get a chance to put Duke on their resumes. They managed to get into the Duke undergrad recruiting pipeline and a couple got offers. Needless to say we won't be making that mistake again.

So if you have other options, even like a tier 2 MBA program (20-50) I'd do that as opposed to doing this thing.

Sorry to hear that as well but you cant judge the program solely based upon two students. Surely your company would able to discern those from non-targets from the Duke undergrads when considering recruitment as you mention they "managed to get into undergrad recruiting pipeline".

Perhaps instead of regrets, perhaps your company ought to provide some help for them to improve otherwise, honestly you many need to reconsider your recruitment procedure.

Aggravate,

That is sad to hear. The MMS alumni I have met are all very impressive. Most of the MMS students last year were Duke University undergraduates so it is strange to hear that they are not doing well at your firm. I have a few friends that attended the program and they seem to be excelling in their roles. The students I know may have been closer to the top of the class, so that might have something to do with it, but I wouldn't judge the program based on the two students you know.

Hi All,

Congrts to all twho got an admit and gud luck to those who are expecting it ! I am Gautam, an admit to the Fuqua MMS program from India for the class of 2012. Folks, I searched a lot on the web and found that nothing "great" is out there ( atleast I couldn't get it ) for seeking information as well as for interaction. So I have created a blog where we all can interact along with gain access to loadsa cool stuff, links, info and official MMS tweets as well ! The blog address is : http://mmsfuqua.wordpress.com/ So whats stopping us, lets get along and communicate !

Regards, Gautam Bharti

In MMS now. It's pretty standard, nothing too exciting. Be prepared for Why Duke, Why you want to do the MMS, be able to explain your personal background--college experience, goals for after MMS, etc.

Banking recruitment is spotty, but MMS will give you access to alums, which is all you need.

What about consulting? I heard from last year's class that MBB took a few people. Do you know if that was from pure networking/luck or because of career services in the mms programme?

I know 2 accentures, 1 Deloitte, prob some others--career services is ok, but they dont really do anything. It's up to you to talk to them, and they definitely have some good interview prep resources. Accenture offers were through on-campus I think, since we're allowed to use undergrad recruiting now.

Not selective at all. Don't expect a lot of scholarship money either--that said, a lot of great schools and smart students are in the program--where the program struggles is developing relations with employers. One thing that is nice about MMS is that it gives you access to old MMS alums, MBA alums, and undergrad alums. On-campus recruiting is weak for MMS and undergrads due to location, but you should be able to network into interviews.

Hey fusiondogg, What do you mean by not selective at all? Do you mean everyone who gets an interview call will mostly get through unless they screw up massively during the interview? I just got an invite for a Skype interview next week. Fingers crossed. How long after the interview do we get to know the results?

Futuredoc, as a person interested in the MMS and who respects your knowledge of MSF/MMS/MFE programs. How did you decide on the MMS? What aspects of the program attracted you?

I decided to apply for a number of reasons namely: reputation, geography, network, and the MMS program's academics. There is a lot of "layman's prestige" attached to Duke. If I wanted to exit IB to an F500 role, even the Nova is likely a better financial education (more finance focused and advanced) Duke likely will hold more sway. Geographically, I really like the South. My long term goal is to stay here so that is a plus. The Duke network is huge. It has a lot of people in BBs and PE/VC; Fuqua is a top 15 MBA so there is that too. Finally the breadth of the program is a plus, it opens other doors beyond IB, consulting for example and for people like myself with limited business experience it may prove valuable.

I applied to a number of programs and ultimately I'd be happy at any one of them, I suspect it will really come down to fit, program ranking and intangibles.
