External Validation??

Hey y’all! Just wanted to get your guys’ thoughts on the topic of external validation. Why, as a society, do so many of us seek the approval of others? Like I’m talking deep reasoning. More than just the typical “they’re just insecure” answers.

Why do people care so much about what BB or EB that they can land, or what PE fund that they can secure an offer from? Like most people aren’t even genuinely interested in the 2+2+2 path, and yet, they pursue it bc it is what is perceived as the best..

It’s just about money bro. Prestige= name brand = opportunities that lead to one’s ability to make more $$$. More money in our capitalist world means you can buy leisure in the long run. Models and bottles are just ego perks.

Of course people are truly interested in this work as well, and would probably be doing it if money didn’t ever matter— but in reality, a big part of the interest is the compensation.

I don’t give a shit about external validation, but still pursue what would be considered a ‘prestigious’ path. For me, it’s about proving to myself how far I can go. I have good intelligence, but am pretty average in everything else. Came from a middle class background in a tier-2 European country, no special talents or advantages. For me it’s about maximising what I can do with what I have, ie my intellect and drive. It’s about being the best I can and achieving at the max of my potential. “Making it” in a prestigious field is part of what brings me a sense of accomplishment, but there’s much more to that. I would not judge myself as being successful if I didn’t enjoy what I do. As lame as it may sound, I love finance and am happier in it than I could ever be in any other industry. It is pure coincidence (and luck) that what I am passionate about is a lucrative and ‘prestigious’ field. In summary: it is 0% what others think and 100% the fact that I keep myself accountable for the choices I make to maximise my happiness.

because we're tribal creatures who have relied heavily on group acceptance for survival and it's ingrained in our dna duh

Check out The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith but in a nutshell people are social, they need social groups and these social groups need uniting factors. Uniting factors are produced through social and cultural connections, which are essential and transcends rich, poor, liberal and conservative individuals. This need for unity evolves into a state of constant validation as there is more interest in conformity rather than non-conformity
