3 yr update: not only did this email work but I eventually got called for the same job 1 yr after and got hired. I still work with the guy that hired me but in a new venture.

I just went back to take a look and here's all i did:

1. Immediately confirm that I am reaching out to follow up on my application for the job

2. one sentence elevator pitch about my experience and how its highly relevant for the role

3. Explain why i was interested in this specific asset class (since its niche) and listed 3 relevant deals i closed

4. ended with :I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your team's needs, as well as my experience, in more detail to see if there is a potential fit here. I look forward to hearing from you.

What;s the most interesting: I never got a response to this email, but my boss confirmed down the line that it's the reason I got an interview.

First, I would try to look for it myself before going back to the MD and asking for help. Check with your career services to see if the firm recruits at your school and try to pull up information there. If not, go through linkedin and try to message through a bunch of recruiters in regards to your information. If you have no luck after multiple attempts, then I would ask the MD for help. You don't want to be spoon-fed.
