freshman summer: repe vs corp pe internship to get pe after ug

hey guys, would like to have your opinion on this...

I'm currently a first-year at a continental european university. my aim is to get into megafund pe straight out of undergrad in london. I already have offers for two top BB M&A internships (one this autumn, one summer 2012) and plan on doing more internships.

now I have the opportunity to intern at a ~4bn real estate private equity fund in london in summer 2011.

would this hurt my chances to get corporate pe straight out of undergrad compared to an internship in corp pe? I'm asking because on this forum I get the impression that youre pigeonholed pretty fast in repe. I'm interested in both repe and corporate pe, but would probably prefer corp pe when it comes to a decision.

thanks!

If you're a first year this is definitely not an issue. It will be a good experience regardless and will let you see the RE business early so you can decide if you really want to do it or not. Just be sure to do traditional finance stuff after this summer if you find that you'd still rather do corp fin stuff vs RE.

thanks! a further problem is that I think I need to chose my group preferences for SA 2012 before this years PE internship. so I'm not sure if I should go for M&A, Industrials etc or maybe real estate ibd group...

my reasoning here is: I already have M&A guaranteed at BB1 this autumn. BB2 does not guarantee group placements as far as I know but has pretty high conversion rate (in case I dont get the PE opportunity I want after undergrad), so in general, "traditional" groups like M&A or industry would be better for both corp pe after undergrad and analyst entry. but I think that M&A at BB1 and real estate ibd at BB2 combined with the REPE internship would give me great leverage for REPE after undergrad...

do you have any thoughts on this?
