FT - FIXED INCOME RESEARCH VS S&T - HELP!!!!

Hi all,

I'm facing quite a dilemma now as I have to decide between ft offers in fi research (HY specifically) and s&t. have been scouring all the threads in WSO regarding exit opps of s&t and considering pros & cons of each path.

Certainly, I understand skill sets obtained will be different, gaining research skills with the former and network in the latter. what do you guys think about the odds of a sales guy moving over to the buyside? I have also taken into account the hours worked in S&T and how producers can also make it big and lead a good life.

Like most monkeys out there I aspire to move to the buyside in future, something like fund management and to give a clearer idea, I'm based in Asia(think HK/SGP), where arguably relationships matter quite a bit.

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

sincerely, monkeyshit

at the moment, it's most probably vanilla equities which i don't really mind as i've always been interested in old school fundamental investing. my thinking would be to build up contacts in the area of fundamental investing and try to move over in 2/3 years after getting my CFA. another factor to note is i'll be directly under the wing of a BSD at the firm, no idea how impactful that will be to my career though.

S&T will be in a regional brokerage backed by a bank in south east asia whereas FI research will be in an independent credit research firm(think lombard street, roubini)
