Got canceled on the internet - what now?

Edit:

Thank you to everyone that answered, I am going to stop reading now. I wish I will be on WSO success stories in the future. I do not have a lot going on in my life right now, but if anyone would like to talk about nature-related topics I would be glad to help on PM.

tdlr: I said something insensitive on the internet and got canceled, right now I am unemployable. What now? I live in a third-world country with a very poor family so no idea that requires lots of money.

Hello guys,

I was a financial analyst in a fortune 500 company in a third world country that got cancelled on the internet and lost my job last year. I am basically unemployable in any professional job in the future.

For context, I am from a very poor family(less then 1000 dolars a year per person) and right now I am working on the family land/boat doing agriculture/fishing. Although I am still surviving right now, I would love to be able to give a better future for my family. Any suggestions?

I am not a troll I am looking for sincere advice from a forum full of smart people.

I do know that some people think that my family and myself should not have enough money to eat ever again, if you are one of those people I would love if you kept that for yourself.

You got the problem right though, I said something inapropriate online. Although it is not a crime or anything like this It is still the first thing that appears when you look up my name, unfortunately, I have a very uncommon name.

The entire company got cancelled on the internet?  Is it a bunch of Chinese people mad that evergrande is collapsing or something?

If this is not a troll post, do everything you can to change your name. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

It is definitely not a troll post! My work is mostly seasonal right now according to the seasons/weather so in the next months I have a lot of free time on my hand and I am looking for different ways to try to put my life back on track. Thank you for advice, I will look it up.

I will echo what others have said, the most logical step is to legally change your name to something completely different. Because it sounds like you didn't commit an actual crime (which could be discovered by background checks even with a changed name), I can't see how anyone would be able to find you with a new name unless you had a very memorable profile pic or something

Wouldn't background checks nowadays how the name change? It'll work on the assumption that the majority of people wouldn't bother researching.

I recommend picking a name with a story that sounds natural as to why you chose that name. In addition to doing this, I recommend doing some community service and not being shy about having your name plastered on volunteer org websites ad such.

Change your name to “bout it bout it”

If they ask why, say that you bout it.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

I am not really sure if it matters, I already lost my job for this and had other offers rescinded. I am pretty sure that some people think what I said is batshit and most of them nothing, I received a support message from 90% of my team, however, does it really matter? If a small number of people can get me fired/unemployable from a professional job I need to follow on with my life in some way. I do want to disclose the message for privacy reasons and I do not want this to become a political debate.

This is an anon forum.  No one is trying to figure out who you are here.  Well, we are at least getting somewhere with the political reference.  I think you learned that it is pretty stupid to discuss politics in any kind of potential job situation.  What you said is probably not going to ruin your career. (can't say for sure because I do not know what you said)  Move on and learn from it.  If you have a good background, you will eventually find a job.

If your name and photo were visible, it is a terrible idea to discuss politics

Was this an anonymous forum/platform, and if so how was your identity discovered?

If you can't legally change your name, some people alter their existing name legally. So Richard becomes Rick, Joseph is Joe, etc.

Last name is a bit more tricky, but how unique is it?

If you can not change your name, and this is a significant enough problem in your life (sounds like it is), then you can also do other legal steps to change your name. I.e. if you get married you can adopt your wife's name. Or similar steps.

So in the US it follows you around forever, and you should be reporting aliases on your annual Finra stuff which goes on brokercheck, and is publicly searchable.  I've been a good boy and reported a nickname as simple as Joe/Joseph. (no that's not my name)

As to pronouns, like WTF?  I've been tempted to put Xe/Xie in my signature just to mess with people.  Like I don't care unless I have a reason to want to get to know your plumbing more intimately.  Fine, be non-binary even, but don't make it difficult for me.  If you're a friend not significantly my senior, I'll just call you dude regardless of gender.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Crazy what our society has become - if everyone were judged by their worst moments, nobody would have a job. Even more insane, the type of people who are OK with ruining lives over social media comments tend to be the same ones who want more lenient treatment of actual criminals. It’s not “equitable” to put felons in jail but hey you said something bad on Twitter, have fun on the streets!

Sure it sucks as a society and I was pretty pissed on the fist months. However, if anyone is on the same situation as myself  I would say that getting pissed is just going to make you fell more depressed. If this happens which someone I would say that the best thing is to get a job literally any job to avoid depressive/suicidal thoughts . I would say that working a physical job and getting physically exhausted every day help me out a lot to cool down/not kill myself and fell ready to follow on. Nowadays I try to think like the loss of a loved one, does it sucks? sure but there is not much that I can do about it.

1) build a YouTube channel around your "controversial" views. if you got viral, it will be possible to get views quickly and grow the channel. there are a lot of people out there willing to hear controversial / honest / direct opinions who will support you and not many sources of such content.

2) be a farmer and fisherman, sell crops and fish and enjoy real life how it was supposed to be lived (and not sit in a cubicle 100 h / week)

3) become a tradesman (electrician, plumber, etc.) - people who are looking for a plumber don't care about your political views and won't google your name, if you can fix the pipe, you'll get the job

many other options, like running ecommerce business, etc., but I'd say 3 above are the best options in my opinion. good luck and stay positive, everything is fine.

I agree with the above: look into other avenues to change your name and commit to some actions that prove you have changed as a person (ex: Justine Sacco volunteered to work in Ethiopa for a month after her scandal).

In the interim, given you are living in an incredibly low COL, consider freelance work (fiverr, upwork, freelancer, etc) and use your financial analysis skills. They can pay decent USD hourly rates. Also, if you were able to get a decent F500 job, could offer career/training/resume services to those in your country and nearby countries.

Thank you Anon! Very helpful comment, I looked at the platforms that you said and I think that freelancing could be a path at least for some time. The rates look pretty decent compared to my country too, hourly is even better than my old job actually.

In addition to changing your name, you could also just apply to jobs under a different first name.  In Western firms, first names are pretty fluid anyways.  Most East Asian employees just adopt invented European first names anyways with the hope of getting better rapport with coworkers.  This is not a criticism of the practice, but I am just saying that it exists and inventing a first name is not all that rare or looked down upon.

God this is so fake. He misspells the easy words and spells the hard words correctly. He uses a ton of American-only idioms and phrases. Just baiting you all.

I do not know what to say about your remarks, but it is definitely not fake. Probably I misspell letters that have the same sound or do not exist on my original idiom, I do not know. You can believe at whatever you want but I can assure you that this is not fake.

Thank you Fill-or-kill, I am not really sure if a formal apology helps. I tried to look at as many cases as possible and I did not find even one that people that were criticizing was acceptable. I am not looking for self-pity tough, sorry if it reads that way. I am a little bit more emotional than usual for obvious reasons but I do not want for everyone to fill pity of me. I am looking for genuine advice.

Although I think that working with people affected as some people said may suit me better, even if it does not help me out in any way at least I am going to help someone and it may be fun.

I have read your post/comment so I think that you are a little bit more senior than the average senior member so I would love to ask what do you think could be hirable in your shoes thinking that I said something close to Justine Sacco. I was an S&T intern when I was doing an exchange abroad and I would love to go back to the industry, I was even planning to do a master's in Europe before all of this happened. Do you even think that this is possible? Otherwise, I would say that I have a very good background STEM major top 0.1% on national standard test exam, cool story of being the first of my city to get into a top University, my name was on the local news and stuff because of this. What would I need to do for someone like you even consider hiring me?

Typically in the states when this happens people get back on their feet after a period to disappear from society (which you've done), but often have to settle for a lower tier firm. I would focus on looking at trading firms in the top cities in your country. I promise you many of them will be chomping at the bit to get a guy with international experience from a prestigious bank. I know its not the same as going abroad, but it's better than where you are right now.

Option 1: you apply for a job, HR finds aforementioned post, no additional context

Option 2: you apply for a job, HR finds aforementioned post, HR also finds a formal apology post and gains additional context

I don’t know what your post was or how bad it really is, but having an apology/context out there is helpful. Another option would be to talk to HR about it before you apply.
