Graduation Verification After Successful Background Check???
[this wound up kinda long... if you dont wanna read it, the actual question is the last paragraph... the rest is kinda just "background" and whatnot (which I do actually think is sorta in a way "tragically intriguing", but whatever)]
Hey--
I just (kinda sorta...) graduated from Penn w/ a BSE in finance and a BAS in compsci... I interned the last two summers as a quant for a big investment management firm (about 100b AUM or so and it's the subsidiary of a big insurance company so I expect they have a pretty well-established system for background checking and whatnot), and I'm supposed to go back in a few weeks as a FT. I've kind of gotten myself into a tremendous mess with it , though, because quite frankly I'm a fucking retard.
When I applied for my first SA position there two summers ago, I had about a 3.5 GPA or so and got the job. After that I was kind of tired of working so I slacked off, got about a C average or so the next year in school, and asked if I could go back as an SA for them the next summer. They said yeah cuz I kinda rocked the internship the summer before. They still asked to see my resume, though, they saw that my GPA dropped to a 3.4, and they didn't seem to care. About two weeks before the end of the second summer (which was last summer) I asked about the possibility of returning as a FT (the place isn't like an bank where the point of the SA program is to recruit for FT, so I actually had to ask them...). They "kicked it around" for a few weeks, then came back to me on my last day and were like "alright yeah, we discussed it and we'd be really thrilled to have you back, we've been pretty impressed with you the last two summers. We can't give you a definite up or down till November or so, though, cuz of how the hiring calendar works." I called them in November, they were like "it's gonna be at least until January before we can give u an answer... we're having a giant corporate reorganization right now." In February they finally gave me an offer. I had slacked that year too even more tho, and by that point I was down to about a 3.2. I kinda crossed my fingers that they wouldn't care when they saw the resume, but they ended up asking for a transcript. I sent them the transcript with a really well-written email about how "I've been really anxious to just get out of school an start working already because I've really hated school and it's taken a toll on my grades. I acknowledge that I've underachieved and I'm pretty ashamed of it, but nonetheless you've seen the kind of work I can do for you, and I guarantee it will continue to be just as solid after graduation" (which was actually true, and it was pretty well-written), and they gave me the offer. They did the background check and drug test a few weeks ago and I passed it all.
Although I had actually legitimately planned to try to do work last semester, it didn't exactly happen... I had already completed all requirements for the compsci degree, took four courses, two of them were to finish the business degree, and two more were to get a second concentration in statistics. I got B's in the two required for the degree, and essentially did nothing in the stat courses figuring "either I'll pull this off somehow at the last minute or I just won't get the damn second concentration... whatever, I have a job anyway." I wound up getting a D in one of them, and the other one I literally turned nothing in the entire semester, tried to do it all two days before the "final project" was due, and it didn't quite happen. I shot the professor another one of my "masterpiece emails" w/ a borderline bs explanation, he actually bought it, gave me an incomplete, and said I should just turn the stuff in eventually and he'll grade it in August, but until then he's out of town. I didn't care at all, because even without it, I had already finished all requirements for the business degree so I didn't think it mattered. Then I got an email from the central Wharton office yesterday saying "what's the deal w/ STAT471, you can't officially graduate until you get a grade in it." I essentially replied "why the fuck not, I've already satisfied every requirement for the degree without it," and they said "yeah, too bad, you can't officially graduate until all courses have final grades. No incompletes."
Even though my employer already did the background check and apparently it went fine, I'm pretty worried now that I won't have "officially graduated from Wharton" until three months after I start working, and that the employer might either find out about it through some kind of "education verification" they do, or just ask me for a transcript, see the incomplete, say something along the lines of "wtf dude, what happened," to which I don't foresee really having too convincing an answer to... If they've already done the background check, what are the chances of them actually "verifying my graduation" when I start working??
Thanks,
Jeff
I think you're fine, but don't bank on my advice. I would say if you hadn't already given them a song and dance I would just give them the 411. But I wouldn't want to start to come off as shady by giving them excuse after excuse. But since it sounds like they don't have a huge entry level class coming in, so they've already invested quite a bit in you.
If your group is cool and your really comfortable with them, I would go ahead and just let them know. If available, I would try to get the most senior person on the phone or possibly in person and say something like "listen I'm wrapping up one last credit with school that will push my graduation till August. It won't in any way interfere with work and I'll officially be able to verify everything come August,"
I think its going to be more a case of how comfortable you are around your superiors. If they're really business like and serious it might be better to string them along with some excuse as why you can't deliver your transcripts till August. I doubt they'll loose too much sleep over their loyal interns lack of graduation verification.
okay, first of all, thats a very long post, most people will not read it. Shorten it and you will get more replies. I read the last sentence and my answer is "YES". You will need to verify, but, it depends on the firm. Most big firms always ask for it, they might even ask for pay stubs from past jobs. Smaller shops don't care as much...
You're probably fine if you've already passed, but perhaps you should send your professor an email explaining your situation so he grades your shit faster.
Also, you are one fucking lazy bastard lol.
Can you drop it with an incomplete?
FYI, you might want to disguise yourself better. You put a ton of specific personal info in your post that makes it really easy to find out who you are.

I know that my employer has already run their background check on me... Will they follow up and do another background check to see if my degree conferred date is appropriate. I am really panicking... and I don't want to lose my job. Can anyone help me?
what country? is summer school an option?
feel free to PM me, i've done some research into this
United States, and summer school is not an option.
i can't PM you yet, since I don't have enough banana points.
get some more banana points, then message me if you don't even care enough to do that i doubt you're going to have the motivation to make this work out~
summer school
I can't do summer school as it will conflict with training.
How do you not manage to graduate on time? Did you just never look at the curriculum?
My employer (BB in NYC) requires an official transcript before they will let you start working. Their letter had in big bold print that you can't start without the official transcript. Assuming yours is like mine they won't let you into training without graduating. Sucks man.
At this point, I have been able to reduce not graduating on time, to having to miss a few days of training. Is this a request that most banks will reasonably oblige?
Do background check firms do another check after graduation? (Originally Posted: 11/21/2013)
I got an offer for FT BB IBD in August, and in my resume, I stated that I am enrolled in a dual degree. For a myriad of reasons I won't go into, I'm thinking of dropping my second degree in a couple months. I already have submitted background check documents back in September, and having had no issues, I presume the background check was successful. I am currently enrolled in the dual degree, but I will officially drop it in a couple months. The job starts around July / August.
Given this, should I just not tell my employer about my dropping the dual degree until I start? I don't want it to effect group placement decisions as I haven't been given a group yet, and I'm not sure how my employer would view this action; I don't think they care about the second degree itself, but the act of dropping it may appear as a red flag to them. I'd rather tell HR as late as possible for this reason (right before I start), after group placement decisions have been made. Do you think this is a good idea? After the initial background check, does the background check firm do another check to make sure incoming FT employees have graduated from the programs they were originally enrolled in, or does the background check company stop caring after the initial check is over?
Don't tell them and just drop it. If they bring it up, you bring it up.
If the FT job starts in August, I would assume you are graduating in april/may? Maybe a summer class to finish at the most... I know you said you dont want to go in to why your are dropping, but with so little time left, I would think the reason as to why would be very important. Why would you not just stick out the last semester? Would you not graduate on time, thus not be able to start in August?
Congrats on the offer either way
You've broken in. Drop the major/classes, keep your mouth shut, and graduate. When you start in August, own it.
don't worry about telling them now. if they ask later, you can explain. congrats on your offer.

Transcript and HR (Originally Posted: 06/25/2010)
So I am supposed to start work and provide an official transcript, but I have not officially graduated for administrative reasons (prof said he would file a waiver, yet to be done and thesis is still under review)...
I walked in graduation ceremony, etc, but do not have an official transcript with a graduation date.
Should I...
A. Talk to HR before hand (not a whole lot of time to do this)
B. Just submit an official transcript with no graduation / degree date
C. Submit an unofficial transcript and a copy of the email from registrar about outstanding issues
D. Have someone from college talk to someone in HR
E. Some combination
My hesitation is I don't want to flag this as a problem to HR as it could go away in 15 minutes, but I am not sure how much longer it is going to take these profs / admins on summer vacation.
Lastly, is this seen as a big fucking deal or as an administrative glitch? Was traveling and didn't have access to email --- as far as I am concerned, I graduated when I did.
Anyone ever been in this position? Do they actually check?
Not to be skethcy. I mean my grades actually went up, straight As, honors, the whole thing. This really is just an admin issue.
Big Fucking deal.....Talk to HR about your situation, simplify your explanation as much as you can, so that way the HR person can get a vibe that your situation is not critical or one that can make you lose your offer.
Talk to HR, that is your best option. I doubt you are the first person this has happened to and they will tell you what to do. It's not a big deal assuming you didn't lie about what's on your transcript.
Transcript post offer acceptance (Originally Posted: 12/23/2008)
Hi guys,
I had accepted an offer from one of the two remaining I-Banks, however, I really screwed up in one of my classes this semester. I was supposed to graduate this December and start in June. I'm wondering if any of you guys remember when banks request to see official transcripts and when all of the paperwork is done for new hires. I am assuming that banks like to see grades through the end of the final semester, but that would mean that they don't look at transcripts until about a week before you start?...
I am hoping to retake the class in which I got a D next semester and am wondering how this will pan out. Will they ask to see my transcript in the middle of next semester sometime or wait to see it until the school year is over? Will they still be pissed if I retook the class and got an A. The class is a Geology class...
I would appreciate any constructive posts as I realize this was a dumb move, especially in this market.
Thanks.
Unless your GPA suddenly goes from a 3.5 to a 2.5, I really don't think they have reason to care. Transcripts post-offer are usually to verify (1) degree (2) GPA, not individual coursework performance.
one of the two main i-banks? u sure ur a banker? i mean an "i-banker?"
We're about to enter a Great Depression. Don't you want a president who's already dressed for it?
opt8 is right, they only look at them to verify degree and gpa. My bank asked for mine after I graduated, before the official start date.
it doesnt matter, my bank (bb) asked for an official transcript or a copy of your diploma. all they care about is that you graduated.
