GS Principal Strategic Investments

Can anyone tell me what kind of activities the Principal Strategic Investments group at Goldman Sachs partakes in?

Is it a kind of private equity, asset management, or...?

LongShotTrader is right. They invest in companies that are specifically of strategic value to GS. For example, they invested in BlueSource to give GS access to carbon credits if/when that market gets established.

I'm kinda confused from all the different GS buy side groups as well...on the website it says:

Private Equity

Goldman Sachs Private Equity Group GS Capital Partners GS Mezzanine Partners GS Loan Partners Infrastructure Investment Group Real Estate Principal Investment Area Technology Principal Investment Area Urban Investment Group

Seems like strategic investments group is not part of it.

Can anyone shed light on these groups? Which ones are the most active? which groups are the best or easiest to get in? how do you apply, or is it just purely from headhunters/internal referrals?
