GS/MS PE placement
Understanding that they have "great" placement, etc., typically out of a solid industry group like healthcare, industrials, energy at either firm how do analysts place? Is it like 50% TPG/KKR/Apollo and 30% middle-markets with the rest going elsewhere? Better, worse?
You always hear about who does well and who doesn't, but what does placing "well" mean?
varies a lot... each year is different. there's no way those groups would place 50% at megafunds. even for a group like GS FIG or TMT that would be quite high. think about how many spots are availble. it really depends. they might only send one or a couple to megafunds each year (based on info from friends who are in those groups) it's also unlikely that 50% of a group would want to go to a megafund... gotta tone down the expectations a little bit
i worked in a top group at GS/MS when i was an analyst and i'd say roughly 60% of the people were interested in buyside jobs, with the remainder interested in something else altogether or were staying planning on sticking around the firm (either within our group or in some other capacity). coming from a top group at either MS (M&A) or GS (TMT/FIG) you'll undoubtedly get interviews whereever you want. naturally not everyone lands offers at the top-most funds due to interviewing skills and the low number of positions available in the first place, but just about everyone who tries to will get at least a very well reputed MM firm like THL or Welsh Carson If you are at MS/GS but not one of the top-most groups stated above, the percentage of people who are interested in buyside jobs will typically be 50% or less. everyone will have a few shots at top tier funds but not really have their pick or much optionality as MS M&S/GS TMT/ GS FIG will. That said, most candidates who go through buyside recruitment will still land in the upper middle market at the absolute least
to go back to the original post, saying 50% placement into megafunds is drastically overstating it since most groups will have just around that many people interested in pursuing buyside jobs in the first place, some of whom will be looking at HF. to answer your other question, when people refer to 'placing well', for PE I always read it as placement at an upper middle market firm or higher, although everyone's opinion is different.
