TCW is not a hedge fund manager, but it is a good buyside shop to get a start. Although, they lost their top manager (Jeffrey Gundlach) and a lot of assets when he was kicked out and launched DoubleLine LLC, a LA-based bond manager http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/DoubleLine-LLC

Other top buyside shops in the LA area are PIMCO and the Capital Group. As far as hedgies go, below is a list of my favorite LA hedge funds, although you should probably also look at San Fran if you are serious about getting a hedge fund job, as there are a lot more funds up there.

Grant Capital Partners (global macro hedge fund) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Grant-Capital-Partners

Himalaya Capital Management (Asia Tech focused and potential partial replacement for Warren Buffet at Berkshire) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Himalaya-Capital-Management

Ivory Investment Management (well-respected value focused hedge fund) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Ivory-Investment-Management

OakTree Capital Management LLC (private equity and hedge fund behemouth) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/OakTree-Capital-Management

Dalton Investments (Asia focused investment manager) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Dalton-Investments

Tracinda Corporation (deep value giant, unlikely to be hiring) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Tracinda-Corporation

Universa Investments LP (runs Nassim Taleb's legendary Black Swan Fund) http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Universa-Investments-LP

What about the San Diego area? Any top hedge funds down there?

Relational Investors in SD. ~$6billion AUM. Activist long/short equity with a large cap and mid cap fund. Their found is on the board of HP and some other firms. Pretty well known for their Occidental investments. Most people I met there were grads from top California schools with some ivies and lac's + CFA/MBA too.

among buyside shops in general: canyon partners, oaktree, and PIMCO are the most well-known and selective in the L.A. area. canyon mostly hires harvard JD/MBA's, sort of like the west coast version of paulson in terms of selectivity. Oaktree hires mostly star sell-side bankers who did undergrad at top schools like wharton, harvard, stanford. And PIMCO does MBA recruiting for account management and portfolio management. Both are very selective, but PM is especially brutal. A few years back, they only hired 1 MBA grad, a finance whiz from wharton who was a star credit analyst at lehman before business school. One guy i know described PIMCO PM interview as the toughest interview he's ever had.

SF has farallon, the huge multistrategy fund. And watershed asset management is a farallon spin-off. Don't know too much about them, but virtually all of their pre-MBA associates go to HBS or stanford. And among IM firms, you have dodge and cox, also capital group. both are very tough to get into.

NYFINANCEDUDE:
PIMCO has been expanding their MBA hiring. I was told that they hired more than 12 last year and are looking to hire an even larger class this year. On the east coast they recurit at Wharton, NYU Stren, Columbia, and HBS - not sure what West Coast schools they recruit from, but I am sure they do.

Yes, I've heard the same as well, but that's mostly for the account management jobs, which is basically sales. For portfolio management, i doubt PIMCO will hire more than 3 MBA grads in a given year.

they recruit at the top 10 schools but not for all positions. so for example, they'll visit berkeley, ucla, HBS, and MIT for U.S. account management but not PM. for the latter, they recruit at wharton, columbia, nyu, booth, so basically the finance heavy programs.

Canyon is a good firm and they have some pretty fucking sick offices... in the same building with the huge talent agency CAA... I was there a few weeks ago when I was in the States. I also met two hot chicks that work at Canyon, which is pretty damn good for a HF

Yes, that's right. That building has a lot of high powered firms. There's another huge asset management firm in the same building.

A friend told me one of his buddies got a job at canyon straight out of columbia business and makes around $600K/year. Hard to believe someone is pulling that much first year out of b-school.

Those hot chicks must be in investor relations or HR.

Ares Management is the other firm in the Century City building with Canyon Partners. Ares has the entire top floor. Canyon has the entire floor underneath them. Both are really nice offices as I have been in both multiple times.

When I went to an interview at Canyon a few years back two of the hottest girls I had ever seen were working reception. (I grew up in so cal so I have seen my share of hot girls). The fact Canyon has two massive kitchens and a gym in their suite made me love the place.

Of course as some of you know, I went in a complete opposite direction and now own a film production company. Talk about a career change haha.
