Always amusing to me that people shit on diversity candidates but EVRs summer class last year literally had the sons of CVP and PNC, as well as the son of the former WF CEO. Pretty sure the son of Jefferies’ president interned there before. The son of TPG’s EVP was part of the Goldman 13. Nobody gives a shit about the astounding privilege of having a seat waiting for you in that manner, but when you go through an accelerated process that at the boutiques and PE shops is just as difficult, we’re the bad guys. I’ll never understand how people would rather punch down than punch up.

Non-diversity here. OP, shut the fuck up. You want everything to be just so? Totally equal opportunity for everyone? No one has a leg up at any point? Read a fucking sci-fi novel, ignorant mf. If I could have gone the diversity route, I abso-fucking-lutely would have. And if my parents were disgustingly rich, I would have opted to live in their massive home rather than a cardboard box on skidrow. Life isn't fair you dumb child. No one comes into the game on equal footing. That's just how the world works. Try not to be so fucking pathetic. All the information is there, available to everyone. It's no one else's fault if you ignored it.

If you had to put in x amount of work to get the job, that's just how it is. That's all you were responsible for. If you want the job, do x amount of work, and there you have it. Someone that had to put in only y amount of work just had to put in y amount of work. That was the hand they got dealt. They did that work, they got the job. You're the bitch who didn't do x amount of work to get where you wanted. It's not anyone else's fault. You can't be mad at someone else for having a leg up. Nope, you fucked up. Accept your reality next time and do what YOU need to do. If you opt not to, how can you possibly sit there playing the victim?

How would you react to a homeless person on the street getting angry because you didn't earn your shoes but instead were just born to parents who could afford them? What the fuck were you supposed to do? Refuse the shoes? Go find a poverty stricken, shoeless couple to be your new parents?

"Mr. Crazy Homeless Man, please step the fuck away."

OP, you lost at a game you don't fucking understand and now ur crying because the rules aren't fair. Someone who recognizes their advantage and uses it will ALWAYS be > someone who sees their disadvantage and decides to complain about it -- in banking as well as every other imaginable pursuit.

Lol another weak candidate who just couldn't cut it blaming others for his poor social/technical skills. Not anyone's fault you just were not impressive enough. Heard McDonalds is hiring. Maybe try there?

Isn't everything we've all done influenced by immutable characteristics? If my parents were wealthier or well connected they could've sent me to Exeter where I'd have a better chance of getting to a target school. If my parents were target school alumni I'd have that advantage. If my parents worked at a bank I'd have an advantage there. Being a US citizen is already a huge advantage. If you were born into a poor family, you just so many insurmountable obstacles against you for getting into this industry. But why do you only focus on diversity programs?

Frankly, breaking into IB is a hell of a lot easier than getting into a top college!! It doesn't take a genius. You have to network a lot, get experience and prepare well for interviews, and if you can't do that you only have yourself to blame. It's absolutely achievable, and if you can’t put your head down and do it, are you meant for this job?

I am a gay individual and I worked my ass off to get where I am. You have horrible views. If it wasn’t for diversity program I wouldn’t have made it. Stop being a dick.

I guess you can blow your MD standing.

Edit: For context, the post I replied to originally said "gay midget"

If without the diversity program you wouldn't have made it, you shouldn't have made it.

Just stop complaining diversity programs are helpful for many - you still need to be smart to get in

Being from outside USA, it is just insane to think that people actually support these diversity programs.

If you want to end nepotism and racism, that's great. Just make the whole application process anonymous.

People who support diversity programs are just:

1) Braindead lefties.

2) People who got in through nepotism and just want to feel good with themselves thinking that this way anyone can have a shot at getting in.

That is part of the problem, that 80% of you Americans don't even know where Spain is. And I know that I could apply to a Latino diversity program and nobody would say anything, even if I'm from Europe instead of South America. Furthermore, I couldn't live with myself knowing that I'm where I'm because of who I decide to fuck or my skin color, instead of how good I am.

Still, I feel humbled that you have to go against me instead of against my argument.

P.S.: Funny how you are pro diversity programs, so anti racist and all, and then the first thing you do is attack my nationality.

OP, how is that different than another natural-born characteristic of being born into wealth with connections? Nepotism and having parents in high places has historically only been privileges for a certain demographic in the US. Also, usually people of colour have to work twice as hard to obtain and hold the same position as a “non-diversity” hire. Ever heard of double-standards?

What’s wrong with breaking this positive-feedback loop trend that advantages a privileged part of the population with a diversity hiring program? No HR solution that aims for equity is perfect, but as long as it’s better for most and raises the average, it’s good. The question is to what extent should this exist / continue…

Another issue with these programs is that it tends to only benefit a specific subgroup of “diversity” groups, which disadvantages other people of colour who have otherwise been able to enter the industry. The victim mentality will only get you so far. Sometimes change needs to come from within as well. A balance is also needed.

Instead of being salty that you’re losing a previous privilege and that there are counter-privileges that help even out the playing field, keep your head low, ego in check, and work hard. Having “diversities” compete against each other in these programs is also highly competitive.

What's wrong with breaking this positive-feedback loop trend that advantages a privileged part of the population with a diversity hiring program?

Except the "privileged part of the population" aren't all white and asian people, who ultimately end up being harmed by diversity programs.

OP, how is that different than another natural-born characteristic of being born into wealth with connections?

The difference between being advantaged due to wealth and being advantaged due to a diversity program is that we have control over the latter but not the former. Some people will be born with more money than others. This harsh reality is very hard to change. Diversity programs, on the other hand, are an intentional, active form of racial discrimination. Companies can end them in a heartbeat, but they won't because of bad PR and bullshit racism charges.

Instead of being salty that you're losing a previous privilege

What the fuck is our "previous privilege"? My college admissions letter and internship offers didn't just fall onto my lap. I come from a stable middle class household, but I still had to work for everything I have. There are minorities coming from wealthier backgrounds than mine and somehow I'm the "privileged" one? Give me a break.

I agree that nepotism hires suck. If you're so worried about that, then we should make the whole application process anonymous. That takes care of the racial discrimination problem too. But of course no one will do something that logical.

Btw, I have no qualms with candidates who take advantage of diversity programs. I would do the same thing in their shoes. But I do have a problem with the firms that perpetuate these racist hiring practices because they don't have the balls to shut it down.
