How hard is it to learn Golf ?

How hard is it for someone to learn golf at a later age ? I'm 26 and I'd like to be a pro-golfer by the age of 31. Only problem is I've never played it.

How hard would it be for me to learn the game in 5 years and play on the tour assuming I practiced every weekend ?

I have a huge upper body, and strong legs which should help me drive the ball farther right ? Most of the good players on tour look weak, even Tiger Woods.

Hahhahaha. Good luck buddy. I've been playing for 15 years and play to a 7 handicap. I play 20-25 times per year and practice fairly often.

Being ripped is actually a disadvantage in golf as it can limit your flexibility. Big muscles do not mean you'll hit the ball on a longways by any means. Golf is all about the fundamentals and not about how fast and hard you can swing.

Tiger started swinging before he was even 1. I'd say you're pretty far behind.

Tiger makes upwards of $50 million/year, he's one of the gratest of all time. I only want to eke out a decent living, I'd be happy with $250,000/year.

leveRAGE.:
unless you have a lot of money, no job, and all the free time in the world, you will most definitely not be on tour.

even if you did have the perfect situation, you would still most likely not make it on tour.

that said, im hoping this was a joke

It's not. I plan to write Tiger a letter asking to be his full-time apprentice.

This is ridiculous 'I'd like to be a pro by 31." I'd like to pitch for the red sox by 30 too. Equal chance for both of us.

MLB pitching requires innate skill of being able to throw the ball fast. That's something that you can't train, either you have a strong arm or you don't. Golf on the other hand doesn't require some innate physical talent.

I really hope you're kidding about this whole thread. For the sake of humanity I hope you're not that much of a disillusioned douchebag.

You're so fucking stupid that I'm concerned my brain will hemorrhage if I continue to be part of this. You go ahead and pick up golf and go Pro in 5 years. I'll see you at Le Mans since I just bought a Porsche.

you should watch the back nine.... guy tried to go pro and gave up but pretty decent flick...he was in high teens on index

I am 28 and picked up golf 7 weeks ago. shot 158 first time out and high 90s now.. i also have a sweet gig so play about 30-45 rounds a month.... i played college baseball and overall good at most sports since i was a kid. I pick up most things pretty fast that have to do with hitting, throwing etc etc... jock here, some brains

with all that being said... I would go ape shit to play to a 15-20 inside a year....breaking 100 is tough for a new player, 90 gets a little tougher... mid 80s a little tougher... see where i am going with this..kingtut is playing to a 7 after 15 years and regular working on his game.... YES its that tough

If you are serious which I highly doubt, first start practicing and after a few months or a year, ask your personal instructor what is the level of play you have reached.

But really in all seriousness either you are extremely stupid or you believe that everyone on WSO is extremely stupid.

lol this guy has to be a troll. I know people who have played multiple times a week for many years and still have positive handicap. There is definitely some innate talent involved, as well as lesons that are attuned to your specific body type (like Hogan golf style, different grips, etc.)

Reality hits you hard, bro...

There is definitely some innate talent. Not everyone is capable of the level of muscle memory needed to play golf at a professional level.

Well, sir, I can cite multiple examples from multiple sports where people took up a sport at a late age and were/are successful. Some people just have an aptitude for certain sports and therefore they progress faster and their ceiling is much higher than someone who might play a lot but have no aptitude for the sport.

You might end up being pretty good at golf, but I can say with near certainty that you will never play golf professionally. Especially within 5 or 6 years.

I would say that Jeff Chang has a better shot of becoming a partner at KKR than you do of playing professional golf.

You've got to be kidding me with this thread. Do you have any idea as to how many people on this site alone, nevermind the world, that have been playing golf for years and will never be good enough to play. Golf isn't a sport like football where you really just need to be a good athlete in order to be a good football player. Golf takes years and years of pracitce in order to just be halfway decent.

I suggest you look for another profession buddy because I can tell you right now that you have 0% chance of playing pro golf especially in the next 6 years.

I have been playing golf since I was 7 (so that's like 20 years now). At one time, many years ago, I carried a legit 4 handicap. Compared to most weekend duffers, that's pretty good. Comparing me to even a Nationwide Tour golfer is like comparing me at the top of my game to someone like yourself who hasn't even played before. Professional golfers are scary good, and quite honestly. golf is not a sport where you can keep working at it and get better past a certain point. You will eventually reach a skill plateau that will almost certainly be well below what is required to play competitive professional golf. Golf is a game that requires a huge amount of innate ability to be able to play at a high level consistently. Also, it's a huge fucking time commitment and the only competitive mid-am golfers I know are silver spooners who "work" at the family business and were members of Winged Foot since they were 25.

This comment is ridiculous and actually offending. I actually am a pro golfer right now. I started playing golf at age 4 starting practicing hard at age 13 played junior tournaments all over the country and then played at a D1 college. Only the best collegiate players in the country should turn pro, these are players who have earned All American status and can get legit sponsors exemptions to PGA Tour events. Also FYI to earn 250k per year you need to be on the PGA Tour, and other developmental tours such as the Nationwide or Hooters are no joke. The players out there are guys who came out of top colleges with sponsors and can shoot 65 virtually on command. I dont think people realize that playing on the PGA Tour is much harder than playing any other professional sport, you would be better off playing baseball. Anyway people who are out there trying to get to the PGA Tour live a brutal lifestyle, they play for virtually no money, play crappy courses, and stay in crappy hotels in some of the most depressing places in America. The lifestyle is so brutal that Im looking to get out myself. Golf is better served as a hobby, there are very few people in the world who have the athletic ability and the work ethic to warrant giving it a shot. There is a huge difference between golf and competitive golf, its hard to understand how good some of these guys are until you are actually out there. I don't want to burst your bubble, but your pro golf career should wait until your next life.

I think WSO needs to start limiting creation of accounts by one IP address.

- Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs get slaughtered. - The harder you work, the luckier you become. - I believe in the "Golden Rule": the man with the gold rules.

I started last year, shot about a 120 my first time out. I broke 100 before the summer was out, and this year I've been mostly around 91 - 94, depending on the course. I'd like to break 80 at some point in the next 5ish years, but we'll see. I have no illusions about ever having better than a 4-5 handicap.

This goes under the category of "High ideas" those ideas you thought were amazing at the time...

I once went to a driving range, it was raining, and I hit the golf ball so hard with my $90 driver that the head flew 50 yards right of. Because I'm a pro, I bought insurance and later that day upgraded to a Taylor Made Burner. That shit is nice, I hit like 200 yards.

MMBinNC:
I'm not gonna be the bitch in this convo, but 200 yards isn't something to be that proud of on a drive.
Agreed
