How important is week 1 of Summer Internship? What to do if I can't attend
Hi all,
Due to clashes with my final exams, I will not be able to starte my summer internship on time. I've tried to apply for special consideration to the university but was told it's not going to happen. I feel very frustrated now.
Just wondering how f**ed I will be if I miss first week's training. More importantly, how do I make up for it in order to get a return offer?
Thanks.
The firm wouldn't give you special consideration to finish your finals? What bucket shop are you interning at?
No, the university won't give me special consideration to take the exams early or take supplementary exams. The firm just 'highly recommend' that I attend the orientation & training week.
If I remember correctly orientation is just (around) 5 days of going over basic finance and economics, accounting, and reviewing helpful excel suggestions in a classroom-like setting. You'll miss out of some networking with the rest of the analyst class but if you can't take your finals early then you really have no option. Best of luck.
UChicago kid? Northwestern? Surprised that these targets know this is an issue yet don't try to accommodate the vast number of structured summer internship programs where their students are recruited
You'll miss orientation, which includes networking events and also orientation to the firm, its systems and also a basic refresh of accounting, modeling, FactSet, etc...
The good news is you likely won't miss anytime on the desk and also so much is thrown at you that first week, you're lucky if you retain any of it. That being said, you'll definitely be behind your classmates as they'll at least know something from training whereas you'll hit the desk day one from scratch. Moreover, you won't have met anyone from networking events so you'll have to make up ground there--other people will be a valuable resource in asking "dumb questions" you don't want to bother your full time analyst or associate with. Best advise is to leverage your school classmates, even in other groups, until you can meet more interns within your group and at other networking events over the summer. I'd also ask the firm if they can provide you the training materials in advance so you can study on you own--won't be as ideal as having an instructor but it will help.
It's not the end of the world so don't get discouraged...just ramp up as quickly as you can once you get there.
Thanks for the answer. I already asked the firm for training materials. They haven't got back to me yet... The internship is actually in another country rather than where I'm studying so it can get a bit hard to find classmates from my school. I'm doing some LinkedIn stalking at the moment. Hopefully I can find some 'comrades'.
Under any normal circumstances, you are able to tell your HR to start your internship later. However, I assume that it is a program which you are undergoing, and hence, not being able to
what you can do is to
Generally, your HR and your manager will understand that you have clashing exams. Its abit weird though, for HR to start the program even before your exams are ended. Your 9 weeks at work will overshadow your absence for a week. And in any case, you can also show them implicitly that you take steps to make up for that 1 week during your remaining term.
Point 1 is a nice gesture but the firm won't take the OP on it. The firm will accommodate no doubt but OP clearly is worried about starting behind the curve.
Point 2 only works if the internship is in the same town as the school (or the school allows exams to be taken remotely, which seems unlikely. It's still extremely disruptive.
The way new hiring works at banks is after the week 10 internship the new hires hit the desk the very next work day. There aren't enough seats for the groups to overlap and pushing back start times from where they are either pushes back the full time hires (and the firm doesn't want to do this as they want them getting ramped up ASAP) or will result in a shorter internship. For the vast majority of schools, school is over well in advance. There are a few schools on the quarter system Northwestern, Chicago, Dartmouth, some of the UC school...) that get out very late....I'm guessing OP is at a school like this.
Thanks for the reply.
The summer internship is in another region so that's why the summer programs don't accommodate students from my university. I'll just rush to the airport once I finish my last exam. At least that's the plan for now.
Dude, forget about school. Your job right now is to get a FT offer.
Terrible advice if not taking exams means the OP wouldn't graduate on time.
Pretty sure that wasn't serious my dude
Also, what is up with your internship / school schedule. which one is off cycle?
A fair number of interns at the BB I interned at last summer had arranged to take their exams away from campus, so I don't understand why this wouldn't be possible for you? Even if you worked some way out with your professors to take it at the same time (across timezones) as everyone else, it would be better to miss an hour or even a day of training compared to the entire week. I think it is helpful to be there for the first week if only to meet people who won't be in the same group as you and to get a initial feel for the firm.
The problem is that the internship is in another country/continent. I have asked the Business School about alternative forms of examination (in a different form or location). They just refused to make any changes because 'clashes with an internship' is not good enough a reason... (makes me wonder why I chose to study here.)
Take your finals early. That's what I did. Still have to cover the same material but you'll just have to do your own self studying to cram.
