How often do you see a rat in/outside your NY apartments?

Attending a FT position later this summer and it's my first time actually living in NYC. I will be in Queens and maybe later moved to Manhattan. I've lived in midwest my whole life and the only thing I might complain is it could be cold in the winter, but I love it chilling. Anyway, do you often see spiders or rats like the media often jokes about? Appreciate any serious answers. Thanks!

The brown, or 'Norwegian' rat is a burrower, and you're unlikely to see them inside unless you have a ground floor or basement apartment. You will see them all the time on the subway though.

Having lived on an upper floor of a 100+ year old NYC building for 4+ years, I'll tell you that in older buildings, you're likely to see mice and cockroaches all the time, although it gets mildly better if you're cleanly and try to seal the apartment as best as you can. Set traps, and snap traps are preferred to glue, since it's a lot easier to deal with a dead mouse than a stuck, screaming, alive one.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Most parts of Queens are super clean. I encountered my first cockroach when moving into the city.

In Manhattan, you'll see cockroaches no matter what. The cleaner you are, the fewer you'll see. It helps to not live on the first floor of a building. First floor apartments usually have a bad cockroach and rodent problem. Rats/mice are not a common sight.

I've lived in two apartments, one during my SA and one now, and am 2/2 for mice. If you don't want to see mice/cockroaches then don't be cheap, simple as that. I've learned the hard way. Find a nice apartment building, get a spot on the 10th+ floor and it will never be a problem.

That being said, i've never seen a rat in my place, if I did I would move out instantly.

I echo what others have said. Rats are found new sewers, subways, parks, and usually outside the apartment. Buy some traps and just leave them hanging around and pay attention to mice pellets.

I’ve lived in two different buildings in Manhattan. One was built in 2008 - the worst pest I got was house centipedes, about 3-4 inside. I didn’t see any roaches in that one.

The second building was built in 1921 and I lived on the top floor. I got one mouse, and one roach. That’s it.

Funniest

Never lived in NYC but visited central Park and refuse to go there again. That park is infested with rats! I literally saw a stampede of rats. Rats climbing over rats.

We walked into the park. There was a retaining wall about 3-4 feet high, as we walked into the park from the outside nothing. Just behind the wall, I saw literally hundreds of rats, between the wall and some small plants. This was during the day. There were people sitting and playing in the park just relaxing. I'm not sure if others were aware of all rats, but we ended up leaving. I have never seen anything like it.

Can't speak for anything other than my experience.

You are more likely to see mice over rats in an apt.  Try not to live in a building that has a resturant on the ground floor and that will cut down the probabilty significantly.

As for the cold, if you are from the midwest/upper midwest winters here will feel downright tropical in comparison.  It is colder north of OKC than it is in NYC in the winter.
