Fellow Monkeys, what do you use for industry research? Free or not. IBIS, firstresearch, bloomberg, CapIQ, freedonia?
I've seen a few IBIS reports that were pretty well put together. I've heard a license for them can be expensive though. Anyone know what a typical corporate license would cost? The others mentioned never seem to have anything substantial.
Our group has had a few industry research providers that were garbage. Just wondering what else is out there and at what cost. Appreciate the insight.
See I've always used Reuters or Bloomberg. Reason being, they're free, but also because Reuters and Bloomberg are competing to be the best free source of data you're almost guaranteed a good and true article. That's the way i see it anyway.
These news sources typically don't have a holistic view on an industry. They write more directly about what impacts the topic of the article, as in very specific facts and details. They never seem to have overarching views on an industry. I'm looking more for forward looking industry trends, KPI's to follow, major players, what affects various trends, etc.

451 Research is awesome for tech M&A and industry reports.
Bloomberg at work or the hotel room (the latter of which is more likely than the former these days), CapIQ at home. Bloomberg is obviously provided by the firm but CapIQ runs me about $20k per annum.

Appreciate the insight. I've heard Gartner has some pretty serious tech industry research but at a hefty price tag.
IBIS is decent for a general industry overview. Gartner is fine, but very expensive. The Big Four will generally issue industry research that is very detailed and sometimes available for free online.
IBIS, Euromonitor, S&P NetAdvantage (surprisingly good), Wood Mackenzie (for natural resources), and sell-side initiations / industry overview pieces
Sell side research - sector coverage and initiation notes are usually decent for the main drivers - and sometimes FactSet Industry to get a better idea of financials momentum and exposures.

Send a phishing email to a kid at Wharton. Tell them it's an application for a highly prestigious and obscure internship. Use their log in information to access all of the databases you need.

Hi everyone, I am starting a long-term internship in a lower MM ER. I am thinking about buying a book from Amazon to learn something very technical (for example, a book called basics of quantum mechanics, its applications, etc. ) regarding my sector covered.
It is an engineering/renewable energy related sector.

What? No... Just read existing equity research reports in your sector as well as news from financial news sources (bloomberg, wsj, TR, etc.) relating to your sector. That should be more than enough.

I worked for Utilities and the only information I needed was to be aware of the value chain of the industry and major players at each node, how tariffs were set, and how regulated the companies were.
Apart from that, reading ER reports would be more than sufficient for your purpose.
Thank you. There is one thing that really confuses me: if someone ER analysts don't know what the products are exactly, how are they going to contribute real research?

Honestly, read the newspaper every day. Even if you find nice and concise summaries somewhere, they will be someone's opinion.
If you just want a quick overview, you can read Market Insight S&P reports. I think they require paid subscription (nobody wants to give info for free).
Check through your schools business library. You may have access to IBIS world or something similar.
I'm a big fan of using the old bloomberg terminal but obviously that requires access

I'm interested in the Industrials area (particularly aerospace and transportation) and want to get familiar with the space so that I'm prepared to network and interview and know what I'm talking about.
Can anyone recommend websites, newsletters, blogs, etc that would help in that pursuit? I already get the Dealbook email to keep up to speed on general banking news, but it would be great if someone could recommend a source specifically for Industrials.

Read as many industry reports as you can get your hands on - most of the BB's issue industry updates as a complement to their equity research. If you're still in school, most universities have subscriptions to databases such as IBISWorld or First Research - some even offer access to Thomson Banker, in which case you might be able to get your hands on some of those industry updates I mentioned above.
Another great way to learn about an industry is to know the industry's top players inside and out - read 10K's/Annual Reports. If you're interested in aerospace/transportation, start with large companies like Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, as well as the major global airlines.
The absolute best way though, but unfortunately also the least accessible - network/meet with someone who works in the industry.

Hello,
I am new to this site and my first post.
I am currently going through Uni will be graduating in 1 and a half years and taking the traditional route as an analyst.
I know that analysts usually specialise in a specific industry so I thought it would be a good idea to start learning about a few different industries to get ahead/see what I find interesting etc.
Was going to start on the energy sector first so just wanted to get some advice on where to look and how to get started in figuring out how the industry as a whole works from a beginners perspective.
Any help would be appreciated.
