Interships for Freshmen/Sophomores in college
Hey,
I'm still a senior in high school, but I'm wondering what kind of internship opportunities there are for freshmen and sophomores in college. I'll be attending Duke next year, and I would really love to get my foot in the door early. I know GS has that spring break program for sophomores, which is really great. What other big firms offer internships that allow, or even better, specifically target, younger college students?
Thanks
I know UBS has a program for freshman. Your best bet is to ask the career services center at Duke. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. It's a good idea to get an internship early especially because it only helps.
As a freshman, I only landed two interviews. One for JPMorgan's honors program and the other for Merrill's unpaid PWM. I got rejected from JPM, got ML, but decided to go abroad instead.
As a sophomore, I got interviews for Citi and GS's sophomore program. Got rejected from both, so now I'm going to work at as a sales intern at a forex shop this summer.
Most sophomore programs at BBs are for under-represented minorities, and women. There are a few exceptions, such as the GS Spring Program, and GS IMD sophmore program which are not looking solely for women/URBs.
As a freshman, you have options in PWM, corporate finance in a variety of firms, and some other, albeit limited options. I worked at a ratings agency.
Sophomore year can be better, there are hedge funds that will take a look at you if you network.
grandpabuzz, why would you go around saying that you "landed" JPM Honors and then got rejected?
As a current freshman, I'm going to be working at a top group at a BB. Never listen to the naysayers - it can be done.

What, are you serious. I want details.
CDN, you can search my post history for a thread entitled "how to land an internship as a freshman."
lol yeah grandpabuzz, that's what I was asking.
If I were you, I'd email some Duke alums this summer that work at the banks with freshmen/sophomore programs. I think they'd be VERY impressed by a graduating high school student contacting them that early (I certainly would).
impressive that you're starting early during your freshman year i would suggest contacting alumni and networking with firms in your hometown i landed a small gig with a PE shop frosh summer... it wasn't that good but I learned a lot and it positioned me well to get a job with a BB soph year
Cool, thanks a lot for the advice. I can't get to Duke's alumni network until I'm actually on campus it seems so I guess I'll start contacting them freshman year.
So it looks like there really aren't many internships from bulge brackets that are available to the younger college kids hm?
I'll also be at Duke next year, but I'm thinking of doing the Engage program(service program) my first summer and then applying for a BB internship as a sophomore (I've also heard from current students that it's nearly impossible to land anything as a freshman). How would you go about contacting alumni? Would you just introduce yourself and express interest? Do you attach some sort of resume?
Interesting article in businessweek that mentions this company. Seems to help get internships for the youngen.
