Investment Banking Recruiting and Feeling Hopeless

I’m an international student and I’m about to become a senior at NYU and I’m studying math and economics and I have a 3.4 GPA.

This summer (before my senior year) I interned at VC in NY and have gained good experience but nothing on the technical side.

I’m trying to get into investment banking but it just seems like everything is going against me. I feel like I’m late. Being an F-1 Visa international student doesn’t help either. Not having real IB or CorpFin or finance internships doesn’t help either. I feel so stuck and it’s weighing heavily on my mental health and I don’t know what to do other than keep sending emails to people in IB and never getting replied back. Do I still have a shot at getting a full-time position? Should I keep pushing? Should I refocus my time and energy to something else?

I want this so badly. Please help.

KeepRunning I can relate - I had no internship experience at all after college (I majored in Biology at Imperial College in london) and none of the banks here in asia would take me. I went as far as to offer one of the boutiques to be an intern (i was already a full time at PWC then) because I really wanted to get in

It took me 5 years before I landed a stint at CS's FIG team and did that for 2.5 years before moving to growth equity

Keep going because the moment you stop trying, that's when its really over

Best of luck

OP, are you applying to IB postings and emailing bankers with no response at all? Maybe you should anonymously post your resume up on WSO (with major identifiers changed) so users can see if it’s a matter of how you’re crafting your resume. I would think if you had a good summer experience at a VC firm in NY, you’d at least get some looks...

Are any of the VC team members ex-IB themselves? Maybe they can help with intros or know some friends that are bankers. You can use this option if you have good rapport with them.

Another thing is - are you dead set on IB? Was their an option to go back into VC as an analyst?

Lastly - have you also looked at IB roles back in your home country.

Former F1 turned H-1B here (finally green card carrying 8 years after graduation). At this point, focus your effort on Big 4 TAS-type roles and then lateral later. With H-1B becoming harder to obtain, banks will be reluctant to foot the bill for a full-blown H-1B application and still run the risk of not getting it.

There's always MBA down the road but it's safe to say that it's possible but very difficult since your GPA isn't helping and neither is your status. I would suggest you to look at IB roles in your home country / continent but that is still not easy with your GPA and lack of IB internships.

More banks have appetite to sponsor post-MBA associates but some banks are more open to dealing with visas than others (MMs like HL and JEF, IMO)... I would personally overweight banks over consulting.
