Is Goldman Sachs in Salt Lake City that bad?
Probably the least competitive office to get into but is it really as bad as what some are saying. I heard the Investment Banking Division is in reality just a data resource team. What are the chances of transferring to another GS office or does other GS offices look down on Salt Lake so it becomes a dead end?

If you're an outdoor sports maniac like I am, you'd love SLC.
Skiing literally 30 minutes away, rock climbing, mountain biking, hunting.
^how is this not (one of) the best cities to live in the US?
Yes, I know a couple of people who went through the SLC program and they said it is definitely a different experience than that of a hub office (NY, SF, etc.).
The hub offices simply outsource some of their work to the SLC bankers. The SLC analyst program is a year and a half of you covering a specific group in a specific office - The best analysts will be sent to the office that they helped cover and will continue the analyst program in that new location. The rest are cut.
Definitely not looked at in the same light as the other offices. You are also working on deals that are being run by offices in different locations so, naturally, you get less exposure to the actual deals and won’t benefit from the interactions and processes you’d traditionally be exposed to in one of their “execution offices”.
That being said - I can promise you that you’d still have a meaningful and productive experience at GS regardless of the location. And GS SLC is still better than what 98% of other applicants get (nothing).
GS SLC > Equities in Dallas
There are two groups for IB in SLC. There is the Data Resource Group (basically pulls data for all the other groups around the country) and the coverage groups. The coverage group roles started a couple years ago. I personally know 3 guys who are/were in SLC in coverage groups. One covers healthcare, one covers tech, and I forget what the other guy covers. Out of the three guys I know, one is full-time in NY now, while the other is full-time in SF in TMT. They both said that the conversion rate from SLC to NY/SF is almost 100%.
Seems like a good setup if you don't have another BB or solid boutique offer and you're willing to work there for 12-18 months before transferring over to a main office. The guys I knew there are really sharp and cool guys.
I think the reason people look down on GS SLC is because people associate it with the back office Data Resources Group and not the new coverage group teams.
